Instument panel dead

Instument panel dead
Just bought a 2001 3.0 X Type.
The engine had frozen up over the winter, lack of anti freeze.
I found eight of the core (freeze) plugs had gone within both cylinder heads.
Also a large piece of the engine block (50mm) missing behind rear catalytic converter. Repaired plugs and did a temp repair to block, car running very well.
I wasn't happy with the repair to the block, so I sourced a replacement engine.
This is where the fun starts.
I dropped the subframe and all the front. Swapped engine using my transmission all my ancillaries inc wiring loom.
All went well, car oiled and watered, went to start it no power to dash !
- air bag light comes on and goes out
- oil pressure light comes on and stays on
- no mileage on odometer and no background illumination
- no immobiliser flash, as its fed from clocks
- ABS priming
A technician tried to retrieve fault codes but no power from plug, he said its a wiring issue, had I missed a multi plug ?
Off he went.... Inlet manifold off and bumper, radiator removed.
Every connector checked I.e inspected for loose terminals / bent tabs / poor fitting cables. All Ok.
All earths ( three number ) removed and cleaned and replaced.
Still same.
Wiring loom removed from AC pump all the way round engine bay to fuse box and bulkhead and re attached.
Still the same.
Ruses and relays checked
Still the same.
Everyone saying I've lost the feed to the clocks.
No obvious loose wires and no missed or dodgy connections, the car wasn't jump started, and battery was off during engine swap,
Any ideas out there will be greatly appreciated.
I have a sparky coming around next Tuesday hopefully he will solve the prob.
Watch this space.
Phew lots of words up there.....

Thanks Dr,
The dash was all ok before the swap, car ran well, the engine management light was on but put that down to maybe a lambda.
On my Jag as you possibly know the earths are from the battery to vehicle inner wing nr chassis on LHS, then over to the starter motor retaining bolt, there is also a small earth from the wiring harness just above the alternator.
All the earths had been cleaned and checked.
The wiring harness is the original and stayed on the car during the engine swap.
I left it connected to the bulkhead so not to disturb the ECU behind the bulkhead inside the car.
The connection to the fuse box also stayed connected.
The battery was taken off before strip down and replaced once replacement engine fitted.
Many thanks for your reply, hope to sort it soon and get behind the wheel,
Kevan.

Not entirely sure that this will help since you've obviously tried a lot of troubleshooting but I had the exact same issue you have. My milage was displaying all 0s without the car able to start. I found out it was because I had taken out one of the main componants of the car (the air conditioning panel) which the car checks on start up; without it the car goes into a vegetative state.
I know you have checked a lot of your wires but it could be that you are missing one of those main components the car needs on start up. If I knew what they were I would tell you, sorry.
Good luck with it!

was the dash lit up before the swap? did you use the old engine wiring harness or did you use the new engine harness? To me it sounds like there is a ground missing from somewhere. Let me know what happens. I will talk to a friend who loves playn with wiring.
Good luck,
The Dr!

A lot of looking and checking and double checking done, it makes sence what you have written.
The car does run check in a millisecond and if all the components don't answer it goes into a vegetive state, I believe this is what's happens to mine.
Thanks for your comments, fresh eyes tomorrow.
Will give updates tomorrow diagnostic guy is due,
Kevan.

Yippee problem solved
Many thanks to all,
[B]Problem solved.
I had a visit from an diagnostic guy yesterday due at 14.30, arrived at 16.30 after me pacing up and down for hours scratching my head.
45 mins later dash lights were on,
It seems me spending days and days searching the engine bay for loose wires bad earths and what not, I was looking in the wrong place.
His opinion was and it's my fault intirely ......
As I've disconnected all the multi plugs in the engine bay I had the battery connected, then when battery removed the ECU still had some power, I must have earthed the terminals,
The problem was three fuses gone in fuse box behind the glove box (right hand drive).
One wes ECU the other was DPC and the last was instrument cluster, DOH,
So I can change an engine but not fuses.........Oh well I was looking for days in the wrong place.
I hope my embarrassment can help others with the same or similar probs.
On the upside he only charged me £20.00.
I would had payed £100.00 to get her running.
Any hoo been out tonight in the cat and no regrets fantastic piece of equipment.
Again many thanks guys I'll keep you all posted.
