Default Intermittent battery idiot light + Odometer display momentarily fading

Hey Guys,

I have an 03 X-type 2.5. I have a decent system in it, it has one soundstream pic 4.880 amp, and a 1 farad capacitor in it.

I've been getting an intermittent battery warning idiot light lately, as well as sometimes the odometer / trip computer display will fade out (the backlight that is) and then come right back on. Voltage appears to be steady. Although with the car running it seemed steady at 15.1 volts, which seems a tad bit high to me based on perevious experiences.

The car seems to have no driveablility issues. And there is no rhyme or reason to the battery light coming on. Sometimes its fine, other times it comes on as soon as you start the car, other times, it will come on shortly after, and other times not at all.

Could I have an alternator problem of it being on it's way out? Is there a wiring or connection problem in the dash - possibly a cold solder joint? Has anyone ever experienced this before? What were your solutions if any? I'm an EE so im pretty profficient with automotive electrical systems. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas that could point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance,

George

I would do an amp test to see what the system is pulling and what the alternator can provide. The voltage is normal at 15 v but should drop to 13 after about 5-10 min. if it doesn't you may have a bad battery or alternator.

Try disconnecting all of your stuffto your system for a little while and check things out? I'd check the alternator for probs...
