Jag Lamentations (first post)
Just bought a jag and just signed up for the forums and this is my first post. It’s an 04 X-Type and I really like it but it’s been an arrggghhhh experience since I picked it up.
1. first the small stuff. I needed to replace marker bulbs, no big deal, except, somehow after I got on the road, the right front marker assembly popped off and the wiring harness ripped. I ordered a new one on eBay (there went $40).
2. Next Oil Change. The folks who did the oil change left the old oil filter gasket on and oil went pouring down from under engine. Luckily, I caught it right away and we killed the engine and put new oil in.
3. Wheel balancing. I took the car in because of a vibration between 60 and 70mph and wouldn’t you know it, the fine folks at costco sheared one of my lugnuts off! And they told me I just picked up a nail in the tire and need to have it replaced. Sigh....
4. On the way to get the tire issue looked at, I discovered all the speakers (alpine system ) on the right side arent’ working. Odd, the entire ride side. I mean they work, but they sound really soft. Blown speakers, bad amp? It’s odd that all the speakers on the right would be very quiet.
5. Finally, the transmission seems to be fine unless I step on the gas hard. It shifts very hard at that point.
I love the car, but part of me wants to just turn around and sell it. It only has 110k miles on the interior is very clean, but man has it been a ride.
Did i mention I bought it thrusday night and all of this has happened since then....

It's early days so there is plenty of time for more crap to go wrong.
Good cars but can be exceedingly disappointing.
Since I received an agreed price to trade mine in (6 weeks ago) the following has gone wrong:
Seized wheel bearing that cost over £400 as they had to replace the shaft and c/v joint and bushes.
Work on that caused the transfer box to start leaking on to the exhaust manifold.
Whilst fixing the box leak they spotted a big rusty hole in the sill.
Can't wait to get rid of it.
Oh, and the radiator sprang a leak.

with 100,000 miles your failry lucky with those small issues ..my brother bought a 2016 Mercedes c300 things went wrong
1= driveshaft flex discs, which crack and shred, causing excessive driveshaft movement.
2= engine oil leaking from the back of the cylinder heads
3= (ABS) modulator assembly
4= broken sunroof switch
5=controll arms are gone
and its only 2 years old with a car note of $579 once all fixed he is getting a jaguar xfr even though they have there fair share of issue but he like the support of jaguar forum what to look for

I picked up my 2006 X Type base from a dealer in Salt Lake City less than two months ago. I drove it back to Albuquerque the next day. Granted, the first couple of hours were a nail-biter as I was convinced that every creak, clunk and groan (surprisingly few) portended it's demise. I was wrong. The 900 mile trip (took a wrong exit and headed toward Las Vegas) went off without a hitch. First thing I did was fluid changes. The ATF "infusion", transfer case and diff. In itself, that made a difference in the quietness of the operation and I thought it was already quiet! Being a 12 year old car with 75K on the clock and well maintained must have had a great deal to do with my good fortune. Bear in mind, I'm a certified mechanic (40 years) and I plan on doing all the maintainance myself. Perhaps you should consider something newer with a bumper to bumper warranty. Genesis comes to mind.... a certified pre-owned with extensive, transferable warranty? Just sayin'

I don't see anything in your post that you're "lamenting" about that couldn't have happened had you purchased 14-year old BMW, Mercedes, Audi,.. or ______________.

I couldn't agree more with the buy from a dealership route. Buying a Jag is similar to buying a sailboat. You are accepting a never ending commitment to fixing something and having 5 more things go wrong in a row. They are nice cars, but better to ride in someone else's than to be the owner. Even with the dealership route, at some point the very age of a car will mean that seals, and enclosed areas will become exposed areas. Same for lots of imports, but Jags just seem to have a higher degree of nagging problems that an owner has to deal with. Its time to get out of the cascading domino of broken stuff appearing every few eeks. It is not worth the transitory enjoyment of a problem free car when something seems to be imperfect most of the time.
On acceleration.....posts on government site about it but never definitely proven. I can only attest to mine does it sometimes. It is a bit scary, especially if your approaching a stop, lol. Mine tends to do it when slowing down. Some people say it's because you "shift" toe of foot from accelerator to the brake, and as you press the brake pedal down you hit both. I can ABSOLUTELY tell you I do not do this. Having begun driving on a farm/ranch at 5-6 years old, with fitted wooden blocks on the pedals to let my short legs hit the pedals. I had to completely lift foot off one to the other. Having learned that way from the beginning, I still do it some 60+ years later.
