Default jag x type radio problem

For some reason my radio sound gets real low and then works its way up to the regular volume. The radio will stay on but when it gets low like that i have to hit on the side of the dash board for it to start working properly. Im wondering its the radio it self or its a bad radio harness. I NEED HELP PLEASE

Could it be that you have the automatic volume control function turned on? From my 2004 Audio Systems Handbook:

Automatic volume control (AVC)

This maintains radio volume at a level
sufficient to overcome road noise as
vehicle speed increases or decreases.
To activate AVC, press and hold the
volume control knob until AVC is
displayed. To de-activate AVC,
momentarily press the volume control
knob again. The level of AVC control can
be adjusted by turning the volume
control knob whilst in AVC ON mode.
When AVC is ON, manual adjustment of
volume will override the AVC setting.
If that's not the issue, is this happening only with FM sources, or AM as well, and most importantly, does it happen with CDs?

I'll echo Jim, although if it's AM, welcome to the club, for some reason AM reception bites in most of our cars.

thanks alot everyone for the help but it seem as if the wires in the back got a shortest. Sometimes when i drive i might hit a bump and the radio sound will go out and then i have to tap the side of it and then it comes on but it starts out low and then works its way back up to the regular volume.

pop the radio out and have a look behind it. It a 5 minute job to pull the radio, remove the fascia around the shifter to remove the ashtray, 2 bolts under it, then remove the pop off fascia above the climate control and 2 more bolts there, the whole thing pulls straight out.
