Default Jaguar P1608 code?

My 2005 X Type stuttered as per previous post. Went into the dealer to get 12months MOT that they should have completed before I bought it! I mentioned warning light coming on then off and limp mode. They said it had stored error code as above. I googled but got P1608 Watchdog Malfunction. He said they cleared memory and will check again.

Whats that mean?
Cheers

Yes 100% when I googled it says watchdog malfunction. The P number is what was written on job sheet.

Iiyama, based on the code, there is most likely an internal problem with your ECU. But, I don't know the complete check that the watchdog timer makes and it could be an intercommunication issue with some of the other computers in your vehicle. Essentially the watchdog timer check is simply the computer talking and sending out some given numbers and checking to see if it gets the expected answers. It takes normally 3-5 times through the check in a row getting errors to trip this code.

Wish I had better news.

Thanks for the additional info. What do you suggest I do or say to the dealer?

Iiyama, I would simply tell them that you are getting code P1608 and you need them to diagnose this. Tell them that you beleive it is the ECU due to a loss of power or some other reason. Granted, that may send them on the wrong path. I think your best course of action is to simply tell them the code and let them troubleshoot it from there.

I told them the code had reappeared but of course when they checked they saw nothing. He has reset it and told me to keep an eye open for it occuring again. After pushing them he said he had contacted Jaguar about the code and it might be the ECU.
My dilemma is can I insist on a "might be" and intermittent fault that they replace the ECU?

Depends on how good your dealer is. If you have one of the very few dealers that treat you the way they should you may get lucky. The other thing is the "squeaky wheel gets the grease!"
