peintre, there is a little known issue with the later 2004 vehicles that is not obvious. I have to assume that your car did not come with dynamic stability control (switch on the center console, near the e-brake, that says "DSC" and shows a car loosing control). After March 2004, jaguar changes the transfer case on the X-Type to an open differential setup. While this setup applies power to all 4 wheels, it also makes the assumption that all 4 wheels are making good traction and cannot slip. If you get into a situation where one wheel can slip and remain slipping, it will take all the power of the engine, leaving the other 3 wheels to just sit there. This is why after mid 2005, pretty much every AWD X-Type came from the factory with DSC unless it was specifically asked to be deleted.
Now, in your case, you are not completely out of luck. Something that you can try is applying the brakes slightly as you also apply some gas to make the car move. The concept is that as you have that one wheel slip, it is going to be slowed down by the brakes, transferring power to the other wheels. You may even find that you will want to apply the e-brake and simply let the front wheels try and pull you out of the situation. But, only do this if you don't have DSC installed on your car. If you have DSC, then the car should be doing this for you automatically.
