Is there a certain year to try and stay away from? Any caveats I should know about? Thanks

There is nothing that cannot be fixed. So rather than telling you what to stay away from, we will go with what you should aim for.

If you are looking for a X, aim for 2004 or newer. All the bugs pretty much were worked out by then.
Also go for the 3.0 over the 2.5
Only things you really need to look out for are the trans and transfer box. Listen carefully when you test drive for unusual noises, whining and grinding.

Thank you sir for the response. When you say bugs in the 02-03 models, what in specific are you talking about?

Dash vents come to mind. But if you're an oddball like me, I like the 02-03 because you can't get the Viscous coupling AWD unit in the 04+ models. My 02 5-Speed with the AWD+VC feels more like a RWD car than the newer X's (2004+) that I've ridden in.

Depending on what you want to spend, you can get a new or newer X-Type for a song right now.

Truly I've said it before and I'll say it again, as long as you pay the right price, any year is a good year! I have a 2002 and so do others on here and we have been more than happy. Every car has its problems and you are compensated in your purchase price for getting an older car! Many people say to stay away from the pre 04's and yet they don't have one, the problems that matter are mostly widespread through all the years. Come back to us for the price you are paying and we will tell you whether it is worth it! That is the best advice any of us could give you! BTW FJT I'm not commenting on your comment, I'm talking about what some people have said in earlier posts about not owning a 02, you work on them so obviously you know all the problems!

Oh like I said I've just begun looking and wanted to get over any major obsticles that come up when you get back into the market.

I won't really be getting serious for another 8 months or so save a financial miracle. For now I just want to read and do research so I know what I'm getting into. This seems like a great board, I'm glad I found it.

Since you asked for a price, Im thinking that 10-15$k is my target range. But who knows what it will be in the months to come.

For 15k you should be able to get a 2004 x-type sport pretty easily. When you get closer to lockign up a deal let us know how we can help you. PM me if you'd like give me your zip and I'll do a search of all the places possible to find you a car for a good price, if you'd like. Honestly though every car has its problems, the problems that the car has, IMO aren't too big of a deal but keep in mind if you get an earlier one like an 02 the price is also compensated. You will find better deals on a 02 vs. 04 obviously.

British Racing Green / Ivory Leather Interior
2002
52,000 miles
$8450
automatic
i'm guessing is a 2.5 because of the price

Barring it is in excellent shape, is that a good price?

Thanks

For the relatively low miles for an '02, that's an ok price, but I have seen 03's for the same price with about the same miles, even 3.0 03's. Just to give you a comparison, I paid about $7,000 for an '03 2.5 Onyx White/Ivory leather with 77,000 miles on it 4 months ago. I don't think $8450 is bad, but you may be able to do a little better on the price for an '02.

I bought a 02, 2.5l, black on black on black, only issue was the poping dash vents and rust, which im figuring it.

But i love her, best vehicle i have driven in winter by far, i love the controls ont he handles, better then the later modles, i just don't like the looks. But over all a lovely car. I payed 12000 canadaion for mine. Just watch for the issues and nioses, rust, check the engine, and maybe get it inspected if you start to get serious
