Key problem
Dear All,
Could you please show me the right thread? I am sure there is one, but I could not find it.
2003, X-Type, 3.0, automatic Exec.
I bouth the car with one original key. I had it cloned in a local shop using a key of a salvaged car. This happened 2.5 half years ago. I am mostly using the cloned key, the original is the reserve.
One day I went to work with the car in the moring without problem. I closed the car with the reomte. Upon returning the remote did not work. I could still open the car and start the engine with the key, but the remote function is gone. I replaced the battery, but this did not change. The original remote works fine.
I found this
about pairing but I am not sure if this is the one I need/should follow. Is that really it? Are there other instructions, concerns? What I am worried about is the car dropping the original key...
thank you for any assistance!
Laci

I wish I could help you. I recently bought a 32,000 2005 X-Type. Fantastic car. In excellent condition, basically showroom. The twist is there was only one key and fob that functioned. I bought two keys and fobs online and made an appointment with the Jaguar dealer. I got there and they refused to program my keys and fob. Even the extra one. Said they couldn't guarantee a successful programming and it might cook my control box and then I'd have to buy a new one that is currently unavailable. They did offer to sell me a key and program it for $ 800.00 US. I thought there were laws against highway robbery. I do have some information my son forwarded me on how to program the keys and fobs, but I am a bit hesitant in fear of balling something up. I am also concerned with my only key and fob going bad.
I am going to follow this thread in hopes of gaining some knowledge.

Dear stephenniz,
Your problem is not the same that I have. What you need to do is to CLONE the key you have. This way your car will not distinguish the 2 keys, they will be identical, both will be operational. This is what I have done. It cost me appr. 60 USD in a local kay-shop.
My problem is that after 2,5 years the clone has lost the reomte function.

You're mixing up terms here.
The KEY isn't the problem. The REMOTE is the problem and the two are not related.
The key has a small transponder chip inside. This is programmed one time, and all it does is respond to a ping made by the car computer. It has absolutely nothing to do with the remote functions of the fob.
The fob/remote is a radio transmitter, that sends a code when you push a button -- that code tells the car what you want to do. It has a battery, which is a possible point of failure, as is the circuit board. Another possibility is that there is contamination between the rubber buttons and the circuit board.

Dear Sone,
Thank you for the clarification.
I decided to go through with the process and it solved the issue for that key, bit inmediately the other key dropped the remote function. So I reprogrammed that too. And then it dropped the first one again.
So now, if I reprogram one key, the other loses the remote function.
What should I do?
Thank you for the clarification.

When you program the keys, you have to do both keys at the same time. Once the car is in program mode, and pings, you have to push a button on each remote First one (ping) and then the other (ping), for the car to recognize them within the timeframe
I believe the X-type can recognize up to three fobs.

I've read this a couple of times now and think I understand but can someone please clarify:
1. I have one key/remote switchblade thing for my car.
2. It sounds like I can find/buy a USED key/remote and program the remote functions along with my existing key/remote so that I have TWO remotes that will unlock etc the car. But only one will actually START the car at that point - the original with the correct cut blade and transponder.
3. Then I can buy a key blank and transponder parts and have those cut/programmed to work with my car and combine that with the remote so that I have two fully functioning keys/remotes/assemblies?
Am I understanding that correctly?

That's right. The fob, key and transponder are three separate items.
New fobs are available. If you have the fob, a new blade (key) can be cut. There aren't a lot of people who can do the cut, but the blade is just held with a roll pin so is easy to install.
The key needs a transponder that the car will recognize. This means either cloning your existing chip, or programming the car computer to accept a chip. Cloning can be done by just about any locksmith who does auto keys.
