Hi there, I have come across this few months back, like you, I got myself a remote from ebay, then I got the remote (buttons) programmed myself and they work. So what I need next is somebody to cut the key, I bring to local locksmith, and they wouldn't cut the key so I went to dealer. Surprisingly they cut my key for free, then I went to my car and this is what happen, the key would open the door and but won't start the car, the "key" itself needs to programmed. Remote programming instructions can be found in this forum and I heard some got their set of keys programmed by a non-dealer. I think your best bet is try to get a local locksmith that works on car key.
p/s: It cost me under $50 to programmed the key.

Do you have at least one working fob??

I've got spares for a reasonable price if you need them.

You can program it yourself on an X-Type BUT you need at least one working one to do it.

Take care,

George

You do not need a current one to program another one but if you do have another one you want to program them both at the same time or one will work and one won't.

Here's the programming instructions from the facts section here. I did this and programmed them in less than a minute.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2056

1 Insert key into ignition
2 Turn key to 'I"
3 Turn key "II" and back to 'I' quickly 4 times
4 Alarm system will chime once when key is back to 'I' for the
fourth time
5 Remove key from ignition
6 Press any button on each key fob and alarm system will chime
for each fob if it has been programmed correctly
7 Press unlock/lock/trunk etc to make sure everything works

Pay special attention to point 6, every fob you have must be programmed at the same time although you only need to use one key in ignition.

Hi Rick,
That is where I got my key fob. I didn't get one with the car at all, just 2 keys. The guy said he dropped it in the snow and it broke....hmmm....whatever. He didn't take very good care of the car anyway, needs some TLC. Anyway, thanks for the info and when the key fob comes I will try those directions.
Thanks,
Sonja

Did you program it with just one? I didn't get any with the car, just 2 keys.
Thanks,
Sonja

I programmed it with two. I only have one key though. The old one that came with the car wasn't working and the dealer wanted a couple of hundred to program it. I had already ordered this one and since it was so reasonable and had all the painted icons where mine didn't I kept it. I originally thought the original one was bad but then I found those instructions on this board and went out and tried them. Worked like a charm. When the new one came I did the same but then the old one didn't work. That's why it's very important to do them both at the same time since the signal changes each time you do the reset so each one was set to different signals. When I did them together it worked perfectly. I do like having the two since I keep one near the garage for convenience when I don't have the key nearby. Now I just wish I could find a cheap spare key.

You can program the immobilizer key yourself, IF you already have two working keys. See Real_Tech response in this thread...

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ht=programming

Programming a new key if less than two working keys are available is a another story. The takeaway here is to make a third key made before you need it!

I just had a VW "high security" key blade cut to a digital photo by these fine folks in the UK...

Express Keys and Lock Services

Green Street Green

BR6 6BG
UNITED KINGDOM

Tel: +44 (0)1689 850008
Fax: +44 (0)1689 854916
Email: enquiries@keysinthepost.com

I found them on EBAY. They have 100% positive feedback. My VW key blade works fine too.

They quoted me the following for a Jag X-type key cut to a photo...

- a full remote key: £75,
- bottom flip part only: £30,
- plain key with transponder: £30,
- or a non-chipped key: for £10.
- add 5 pounds for shipping to the US.

1 British pound is currently about $1.59 US. So for about $55.65 shipped (USD), you can get a cut transponder key in the mail.
