location of cylinder #2
I have a 2002 Jag 3.0 x type. It's codes are p300, p302, 1314, 1316, 1000. After reading a lot of threads I replaced the coil and spark plug I thought was # 2. looking at the engine I replaced the coil on the front side closes to the belt on drivers side. I still have the same problem and after reading more threads I am unsure if I replaced #2 or #6. can anyone please clarify cylinder numbers for me. Thanks
Cylinders 1, 3 & 5 are on the firewall side. Cylinders 2, 4 & 6 are on the radiator side.
1 & 2 are closest to the serpentine belt - the "front" of the engine.
5 & 6 are closest to the battery.

that's what confuses me. the battery and belt are both on the drivers side. I would call the belt side the front of the engine. is it 1 from front of engine on firewall side and 2 driver side front near belt under air box closest to pcv hose and air box intake?
No problem. For a moment, I thought you were referring to the skinny belt next to the battery. That's for the water pump.
The "front" of an engine is always where you'll find the serpentine belt and timing chain(s) or timing belt(s). On our Jag's you can see one of the two timing chain through the hole were you add oil to the engine - on the US passenger side. The "rear" of the engine bolts to the transmission - on the US driver side.

Nothing to be embarrassed about. It would be much easier if the auto makers stuck to an industry convention for numbering cylinders. But they don't, so even veterans need to double check a reference, particularly when working on multiple engine brands.
