Default Lock and door catch problems..

Hi folks; the outer door handles on both front doors are broken and inoperative, and only the nearside inner handle works to open that door - the drivers door won't open at all.
I managed to get the door cover off the nearside door to see how to get to the handle to change it; however it seems to me that the window lift channel is (conveniently) placed right across the back of the two fixings that secure the outer handle through the door skin.
Can't see or feel either of them, so has it got to be a window-out job to get at the screws?
The outer handle on the drivers door has broken off at the two hinge butresses, but it looks like the remainder (the inner part) of the handle is still there and connected - so is it possible to fashion some tool or other to get into the reverse side of the handle and push it down to get the door open?
Any pointers welcome - 2001 X-type - cheers.
