Default Locked out of 02 X-type

Hi, I locked my keys and spares in the car. Is it possible for a locksmith to gain access to the car without breaking the windows? Thanks!

Will the trunk pop open when you push the button?

If so, you should be able to tilt a rear seat down from the trunk to get to a door handle.

If not, ya gots a problem.

Personally, I would pry the top corner of a front door out a bit, and wedge it open enough with a piece of soft wood to be able to fish around with a piece of wire for the keys or hook the handle.

Stuff a chamois cloth in there before the wire, so you don't scratch the paint.

No idea if a locksmith can open the door, or if a "Slim Jim" might work.

Welcome to the forum Sofa.

I just did this as well in my wifes S Type. As Steve mentioned that is about all you could do, I tried that route and failed. Becareful of the rubber trim between the door and B pillar.

I wound up at the dealer buying a valet key and having it cut for $60.00. The least expensive way to go.

I don't think you will find a solution quickly. A few months ago I was in the middle of France (around 200kms from home) and I locked my keys in the boot, by accident! It seems that my 2007 X-type was one of the most secure models made. The only way in was by destroying the boot lock (which is electronic opening, no key), and then getting in via the back seat. The alternative (which I used) was phoning a friend to collect my spare keys from home and drive 400km round trip to give them to me. Not a happy experience I'm, afraid!

I guess the USA.
Vehicle recovery companies often know how to gain access in a gently way.

If you have a US spec car, break the left rear light cluster and reach in and pull the yellow trunk release. Then crawl in through the back seat.

Thanks all for your responses! I haven't yet tried to get in but my plan is:
1.call a locksmith
2.if they can't open it, then pry the door as described and fish for the keys
3.break the rear light cluster to release the trunk

I called Jaguar roadside asst. and they told me they would have to tow it to a dealership to open it -- not gonig to happen. I'll update once I get in.

Don't be penny wise, pound foolish, if the locksmith can't do it then the tow sounds like the best option. You may break things otherwise (and will if you go through the tail light) and could end up spending way more money on it.

Yeah, that's a good point but it's just not the cost of towing + dealership. It's also because I left it in gear (1st) and that it's in a narrow garage (3 inches of clearance on either side) so extracting it from the garage could be risky.

When this happened to me a tow truck driver was able to slip an air bladder in between the upper door frame and the door, fill it with air until there was a slight gap, reach in with a fiberglass pole/hook and pull the unlock switch.

I was cringing at the thought of a bent door frame or broken glass while I watched, but once the door was opened it popped right back to normal.

I mentioned the tail light because of a thread about the trunk (boot) lock not working. And people had opened the trunk that way.
I did the fix where you attach a tie to where the yellow release is and thread it through a hole behind the tag. So whenever you are locked out just remove the tag (or bend it up) and pull the tie. Get in via the trunk.
I'm one of those guys with just one key. So I need an alternative way in!

instances like this make me really appreciate the new smart keys that pop the trunk back open if the key is in there.....or wont lock the doors if the key is inside.

back on topic.....dont break the light...if the locksmith cant open it, then go the valet key route. for $60 its not bad at all

Do you have the Tibbe code for the key? It is in the form T434212.


Is it wriiten in any of your documents?
Maybe contact the previous owner or orginal supplier as they may have the code.

With the code any half decent locksmith / Ford dealer will cut a key.
it is a generic key that fits many models from Ford.
You do not NEED one with a chip in but it is worth getting one for future coding/use.
Once you have the code you can even order one over the web.

How did you get a valet key made without your main key/key fob? The dealer needed my key to make my valet key. A word to the wise that I learned (especially because it is a Jag), I alwasy carry TWO keys with me. My cat likes to lock me out...on its own! Thanks.

I called Scott Jaguar here in Charlotte and mentioned to the parts manager what had just happened. He asked for my last 6 of the VIN# and said to bring proof of ownership. I took my drivers license and an insurance card that has the VIN and my name, he cut the Tibbe valet key within 5 minutes of me showing up.

The valet key would not start the vehicle (not being programed) but would unlock doors and trunk (boot) using the key holes.

I did have the valet key programmed along with a new switchblade FOB that a friend had given me.

The dealer needed to read the cutting code from your existing key.
I can get keys cut by just emailing a photo of the existing key to a key cutting outfit.

The valet key would not start the vehicle (not being programed) but would unlock doors and trunk (boot) using the key holes.
My X type only has a keyhole in the drivers door and not in the trunk.

My suggestion to X type owners is to get a spare key.
It does not need to have the remote lock/unlock buttons.
A simple Ford clone is fine. My spare keys have no logo on them which apart from making them cheaper, if I lose one there are few folks in this world would guess its a Jaguar key.

henry, here across the pond Tibbe keys are not as common. Even most of our locksmiths don't have the equipment to cut and program Tibbe keys. I had never realised how they actually worked. Until my thread "I am an idiot" over in the S Type section my knowledge was zilch, I have now become more knowledgable.

I have a Ford dealership up the street from us and I am going to stop there and inquire about Tibbe keys. I will report back.
