Locking issues
I have an 02 X-type 3.0 and for some reason when I push the lock on the driverside door to lock the doors the lock pops right back open and will not stay locked. This is also causing problems with me using the remote as it seems to think the door is open or something and wont work at all. I can't even lock the doors with the key. I put the key in the door and turn it to lock it but it does the same thing...just pops back unlocked. Any ideas for where to start?

Well, for starters, make sure that all of your doors are closed and that the you are turning the key to the right when you have the key in the door! The car will not lock from the inside as a safety feature to make sure that you don't forget your keys and lock them inside of the car! It is odd thought that it won't lock from the key fob or from the key hole in the door! You might want to give the dealer a call, but before doing that, give the car a hard reset! Disconnect the battery for at least 30 minutes, and then reconnect it to see if that helps the system! The key fob or the key in the door should work! Try holding the key to the right for about 5 seconds when in the door and see if that helps!

one other spot to check is the keyhole on the steering column. there is a small flap that should cover the hole when the key is out, but this is prone to staying open at times. just insert the tip of the key into the hole once or twice and it should snap back into place. the remote will not work to lock the doors if this flap is open. just a thought.

Also lube it with a little WD40 or similar then slide it ( your key
) in n out a few times to loosen it off.Jim

Ok, quick update. I tried the battery idea and nothing. It will not let me reprogram the fob. I replaced the battery in the fob and still nothing. I didn't check the little flap yet but will at lunch time today. The fob didnt work since I originally posted, then just for the heck of it I tried it today when I parked and was heading into work...and the damn thing worked...
I am going to call the dealer and see if I can get a spare fob and also schedule for them to check into the issue. Just wondering if they will do a quick locking/door issue inspection with out racking up a massive bill.

I have had the issue with the metal cover for the ignition several times. It still happens occasionaly but a squirt of light oil usually sorts it.

Ok....went to check out the key flap. It's up, but not the entire way. However, the FOB still works whenever it feels like it. Do you think that by fixing the flap to completely close this will help? Would this flap also cause the locks not to lock when I press the lock forward to lock all doors. When you push the button on the handel forward to lock, all the doors lock then unlock again...Really strange stuff here. I think I might just go in to the dealer and spend the $90 for them to look at the inside of the door and tell me what the heck is wrong...

I can tell when the flap in the steering column is not closed correctly because I hear the bell telling me the keys are still in the ignition when I open the drivers door. I simply re-insert the key in the ignition switch and pull it out and when the bells stop ringing, I know the doors will lock.

Yep - it took the guys about 5 minutes. The sad part is, I was in Minneapolis on a trip when it started acting up. I went to the Jag / Lotus dealer downtown to get it fixed. They said the GEM module was bad and needed to be replaced. That bill came to about $1000. I told him to hold off on ordering that part. Later I took it to my my guy in Rockford IL. And he fixed it right away. Then he said, "That's why I have my guys look at the car before I order parts." Sure am glad I have an honest mechanic. That guy in Minneapolis ..... [:'(]
