Angry MAF sensor

Hi all, I have a problem with my 2.0 D X Type,
the car eats MAF sensors . They last around 4 months and then the engine warning light comes on the car loses power and another one is consigned to the trash bin.

It really does not matter whether I get them from Jaguar (£136) or Ebay (£25 to £35) they last the same amount of time.
My local Jag dealer has offered to find the problem but at £145 per hour labour rate I would rather keep a spare in the boot (trunk) I love the car but it is getting to a point where I am thinking of going back to Citroen.
Any help or suggestions would be useful
Thank you

Mike

I don't know much about diesels, but my guess is you have an additional problem and the MAF is symptom and not the whole cause. Post teh code it sets off and more than likely someone on here will be able to diagnose it for you.

Hi all sorry
,should have said ,the code reader comes up with MAF fault only,so I am pretty sure that it is not anything else.I have tried CFC cleaner and it worked for a couple of weeks but we are still back to square one.

Just find it hard to believe that all those MAF sensors just go bad that quickly or are defective. Either something is causing them to go bad quickly or you are not looking in the right place. Post the code number you are getting.

Code is p100 air flow sensor fault.Whilst on tickover and the reader connected, a flat line is shown. Then every so often a spike or a series of spikes are shown in the line.which tells me it is an electrical fault.
It looks like a weekend under the bonnet is on the cards to try and find this annoying thing.
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all but the dealers could not fit it in on diagnostics for a week or so even so this little exercise cost me 60 pounds still may be money well spent ?
Regards

I am not sure if the codes for a diesel are the same as a gasoline engine, but if they are I think you missed a number in that code. If it was MAF related those codes would be something like P0101, P0102 or P0103. If the code is P1000 that just means that the system is not yet ready and the car hasn't met the amount of drive cycles without an issue, which would then get P1111, meaning everything is fine.

My MAF went in another car and it was caused by a backfire. I do not know much about diesels, but a backfire can cause the MAF to go. Mine was due to accidentally switching the spark plugs when I installed the motor. I agree with Alpha that there is likely something else causing your issues.

There's no code p100 so what actual code was meant?

Hi Mike. Your fault sounds very much like the one I had a few years back.
Correct me if I am wrong but the MAF sensor is the one on the Air Box pipe. When I did a service on mine before the MOT the EML came up and my reader said the same but it wasn't the actual sensor. I found that when removing the engine cover I had pulled the lead and one of the wires had pulled in the plug. I inserted an extra wire and have had no problem since. Check the plug leads as there is not really anything that can blow the sensor in the short term.
