manual transmission popping out of 1,3,5 gear?
Hi, I've been reading up on jaguars for a while now and just recently picked up a 2003 jaguar x-type it has 97k on it
Problem:
I was driving it for about 4k miles and then on the way home it didn't want to stay in 1st 3rd or sometimes 5th. if you put it in one of these gears it just pops out unless you hold it in.
the manual gear feels like its hitting something and not seated in properly. the stick will stay in 2nd and 4th gear and reverse.
I'm thinking its a linkage problem because I can't see synchros going in all three gears like that.
but from what I'm reading I also see these clutch go pretty easy.
I'm just trying to get a better idea whats going on here and if anyone else has had the same problems
thanks for the help
phil

In other manual transmission cars when it pops out of gear that usually means the cyncros are going bad. I personally never had an issue with my 04 X manual trans. When I bought the car the clutch was replaced by Jaguar and I put 45k+ miles on it in 4+yrs and never had an issue.
Any grinding when putting the car into gear? Or other sounds from the trans? Have you checked the fluid level and has it been changed to the best of your knowledge?

Check your clutch an slave cylinder i know this might sound like it cant possibly be the problem but when a pressure plate is bad or hydrolics the clutch sticks and when you try engaging the gear it will grind or pop back into neutral. As i tech i seen this many times and every one tries to blame synchronizers instantly but they are rarely the problem.

there is some grinding when you put it into gear. I've been a little busy with working doubles for the last three weeks.
I'll see if I can pull the transmission and get a better look at the pressure plate.
I think if it was the pressure plate it would be real easy for it to slide back out of gear so I'll check that out and get back to you guys
thanks for the info

I had a Subaru with the same problem last year...
The bearings for the shaft that hold the 1,3,5 gears were shot so there was too much fore/aft play meaning you couldn't properly engage/maintain those gears,
2 & 4 which were on a second shaft were unaffected...
for me it was cheaper to get a second hand gearbox
best of luck
