A couple of my map light buttons have failed and I am looking for a new console. My questions is for a 2003 X-Type, can I swap what I have - which doesn't have the garage door opener option - with one from the same year that has these buttons?

You will need to check the guide on adverts like this or seek someone in the know.
I am hazarding a guess but I dont think the wiring will be available if your model was not factory-installed, but there's an ad with a guide here:

dfox, looking at the diagrams, you should be able to slip the garage door opening in place of the module you have now. The wiring should all be there as all the electronics to do the garage door are built into the console itself.
