Default Misfire - bad smoke

Hi all,
Am new and have read over your advice and I hope you can help me as well as you have others on this site.
I have an 04 x-type estate 2.0DSE, around 66k miles. Lately the car is spurting out serious smoke and chugging. It is worst when you reach say 50 -60mph and slow down by easing off accelator, when you go back on accelator it chugs and smokes badly, same about town when you hit the accelator.
Had the EGR cleaned and mechanic now says he will replace EGR valve.
Is this the problem?
