Default Need advice on used transfer case

Hi everyone,

I took my 2007 X-type to the mechanic because of an oil smell coming into the car that I couldn't identify the source of. They just told me that the transfer case is cracked and will need to be replaced...$4000 with labor and the part itself is $3000 (ouch).

When I asked them about putting in a used case, they said they would do it, but advised me up and down against doing that. I'm not sure if that is just mechanic propaganda, or if I should be worried about using a used part.

I am including a link to a transfer case I found on ebay that I am thinking of buying - 07 08 Jaguar x Type Transfer Case 225369 | eBay

Any advice on whether or not I should go this route would be extremely helpful.

Thanks!

James

Do you know this mechanic very well ? Just asking b/c are you certain it's not just a leaky seal in the oil pan that every x type has and created the same smell. Why do you believe it's the T/C - any symptoms ?

james, as many have found out, if you have recently had fluid added to the transfer case, it will cause a burning smell like you are experiencing. For that matter, if you have had the engine oil changed recently, that can cause what you are smelling (gotta love having the oil filter directly above the exhaust pipe).

As for a used transfer case, I say go for it. It is not any more risky than putting in a brand new one. If it is going to have issues, it is going to have issues.

The cracked transfer cases as I recall were mainly with the early X-Types. With the upgraded transfer case, this seems to have become a non-issue. Granted, if the mechanic is so "sure" that it is a cracked transfer case, then they should have no problem showing you the cracked case.

I wouldn't think twice about putting a used transfer case in my Jag. Only a few bearings, gears and seals that can go bad and you'll know for sure if it's bad as it's noisy as heck, leaking fluid, or in pieces.

Save the money and go used.

What would cause a no reverse problem after putting in a transfer case on my 2005 X-type?

I also have a failed t- case in my 07 and is now getting a used replacement. Mine was not leaking fluid but began making a grinding noise 30K miles ago. Yesterday it finally locked up and is now toast. My Jag service rep said only used or remanufactured t-cases are available now. I think it's a crap-shoot whether the next one will be any good.

footbrake, check your tranny fluid level. If it is a little low, it can cause the tranny not to shift into a gear. After that, I would be looking at the wiring harness to make sure you didn't nick anything.
