Default Need front suspension advice (sway bushings etc.)

Guys:

I really need some advice regarding what to do. Please keep in mind that I will be paying a mechanic for labor for these items.

I am starting to have a clunk ocassionally up front.... I know this will become worse eventually. (This is the 2nd X)....at this point I had the front sway bar links replaced when I was having the rear completely redone, and a front wheel bearing, since it’s a easy thing to do. I have now two options; I can have the front sway bar bushings changed , if it does not require dropping the frame, or just go ahead and have the control arms, outer tie rods, and struts/strut mount/strut bearings/ all changed in one hit and forget about it.

So the question is, if the front sway bar bushings can be changed without dropping the subframe?

YES I HAVE SEARCHED, and some posts say absolutely, some say no, and someone even mentions stuffing old tire rubber in there to quiet the car. Someone said small hands help....

If the subframe has to be dropped, then all the other parts need to be changed. I don’t want to have to pay for labor over and over again.....If not, then I can just try having the bushings changed and see if it takes care of the noise. Car has 60K miles.

Thanks for your help!

I've certainly done it without dropping the subframe. It is tight and if you've got the car on axle stands, as I did, it's an uncomfortable job, lying on your back. You need thin ring wrenches to get onto the bolt heads from the centre of the car, rather than from the wheel arch side. Don't forget to lubricate the new bushes with rubber or silicone grease where they run on the sway bar, but not where they contact the subframe or the retaining cap. Torque should be 48Nm/35ft lbf, but if you can get a torque wrench in there, well done!!

Thanks. The car would be on lift, so if it can be easily done by my tech without major labor costs, then it’s worth it to see if that helps.

So so you think he can do it on the lift fairly easily ?....thanks

as armstrong said... having access makes it much easier, i tried via the wheel arch...that slim ratcheting wrench is the best way to go for sure.
on a lift it shouldnt be too hard

there is a post out there from someone who says it took him 5 hours. I am not going to pay for that kind of labor for just that, but if they can be done in less than an hour on a lift, then that’s reasonable.

I ordered the bushings already. Hopefully this is the solution.
