need help with rear shocks.
have a mean rattle in the rear of car when i hit bumps. i recently replaced my rear sway bar bushings with grease-able ones from racing industries(which i had to modify slightly to get brackets to fit). now i think my shock is bad on drivers side. the inside of my tire on drivers side rear is so worn i can see the steel belt, towards the inside of the car. when i push the car down to test shock i hear it sounds blown. now to the question. im not sure which of the three types of shock i have on there, last i remember when i did the brakes they said "SEDAN AWD STD" but i see no info on the rear ones. my vin is is as follows : SAJEA51C64WD70059
i know i have the x1 package, 17inch wheels, yadayada...
help me out guys, my tires ready to blow and my fzr600 has more wiring issues than you can shake a multimeter at!!! see pics for details thanks in advance -stevis05

Sounds more like a broken spring. Not much to rattle with the shock but if you do want to replace them check out tire rack. Paid less than $200 for mine shipped and their Blisteins just like from factory. Wouldn't worry about which type you have on there as the replacement number from Blistein has the same shock number listed. I'm assuming that the differences lie in the spring set up.

i had to replace both my shock absortbers, rear anti roll bar bushes , drop links and the rear suspension controll arms to sort my suspensions clunks, creak and more importantly the feel that my rear end was going to swing out at any moment when cornering at speed. I too had worn inside edges on my tyres.
The shocks are different, the sports ones are more expensive and a little more difficult to get hold of.

Stevis, I had inside edge tire wear problems on my X and it turned out to be the fact that the lower forward control arms in the rear had worn bushings. This causes the rear tires to actually point towards the center of the car slightly, resulting in the wear. Bad shocks are just going to cause the tire to bounce more, leading to possible traction problems and in worst cases, cupping of the tires (ie, uneven tread wear in the same location side to side, but not all the way around the tire, think of it as flat spotting the tires in spots). If you look at the outer joint of the lower/forward arm, you will see where the bushing has cracked all the way through, leading to the sloppiness.
As for the shocks, find a good sport shock (Bilstiens are liked by a lot of people) and go from there. That should be all that you need.

ok thanks for the speedy replies. i work with a woman who just changed all the suspension bushing on her ford escort zx2, and she really knows her stuff when it comes to mechanics. i will show her the suggestions that you have all mentioned and try to get put it on the lift at her barn. i want to mention though that i saw rear shocks on partsgeek.com for 84.xx each, less shipping costs. they had 'comfort' style for awd x-types, and also for (get this!) FWD x-types!! if anyone finds a fwd x-type let me know!!! only way i see that happening is if the rear diff is blown and drive shaft is gone!!! haha anyway i will keep posted on what i come up with and try to get a pic of my rear swaybar bushings for others to see. the oem bushings alone were 50 bucks or so and didnt include brackets. the ones i put on were polyurathane racing industries for 19mm (3/4") WITH grease fittings and were only 19 dollars!!! thanks again ill keep you guys posted -stevis05

The X-type is very limited as to rear shocks for the AWD version. Bilstein and Sachs-Boge are about the only choices. Bilstein makes two grades each, 'Comfort'(OEM grade) and 'HD', for the 'standard' and 'sport' suspensions, so they have the largest selection. Sachs-Boge makes only one grade for both suspensions. Here are the Bilstein numbers:
W/Sport Susp, Comfort-front: F4-VNE-5362-BG rear: F4-BE5-2981-H0
HD-front: F4-VE3-5149-H0 rear: F4-BE5-6676-H0
W/Standard, Comfort-front: F4-VNE-5361-BG rear: F4-BE5-6227-H0
HD's are the same numbers as the Sport Susp.
Many on-line parts retailers use the same digital parts catalog....they just insert their own pricing for each part. For some strange reason, these retailers show FWD rear shocks in the catalog here in N. America.

How to remove old rear shock
I have a question on my 2003 X-type that I couldn't find an answer to with a search...
I'm trying to replace my old (original) rear shocks at 210K miles, but I can't loosen the large bolt at the lower end.
It looks like either nut ot the bolt head is welded to the frame so that only one of these will turn, but I can't see which one it is ?
I don't want to put the full force of my extended breaker bar on this until I'm sure if its the nut (21mm wrench) or the bolt (19mm wrench) that I should be turning.
Can anyone tell me which I should turn ?
I've left this to soak with some PB Blaster overnight but still can't loosen it.
Thanks in advance !
