New guy w/ a few questions
New to the forum and new to Jags from the Louisville, KY area. I have a few questions before I spend my money in this car. Never owned a Jag, but sure would like to
I have a chance to buy a 2003 X type 2.5 AWD. Silver with black leather. Looks good inside. Outside has a few scratches and a chunk missing from passenger side skirt. Test drove it and drove fine but when I look under the car there is oil every where. It has less than 70,000 miles. To top it off… I can get this car for $8500. Too high?
My question is:
What could be the problem with all of the oil? I really didn’t have time to look in to it and see where it was coming from. It’s a Repo so the place that has no idea about it nor will they tell me any thing about the previous owner.
I’ve had a few people tell me I can get the extended warranty. Anyone know how much that would cost? I’ve tried calling two different dealer ships and seams like the warranty people are always off.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

would you be willing to spend a lil more $ like $10k-$12k? if so then i would wait. look around and you can find an X-type with lower miles, better shape, and no oil gusher for areond that price. And another thing to think about; if you own a Jaguar you must maintain the car. If the person before you had it and could not even make the payments on it what makes you think they ever spent the money to get the oil changed? I have a feeling they beat the hell out of the car. I my self would think maybe a gasket is bad... did you drive the car?

Yes I drove the car. Seemed like it drove fine. But hell I'm used to Grand Prixs.
What about the warranty? Couldn't I get the warranty and go have all that fixed?

yes and no. here's the deal: If you buy a Jaguar from a Jaguar dealer then yes... but not from the repo man. I know how you feel- saw this sexy looking car and a price that you can afford and you might over look some normal stuff that any other time would make you walk away from the car. it's ok.. we have all done this. here is what i think, walk away. look around and you will find that a 2003 2.5 in mint condition will cost you just a lil more like 2-3k. You said "a chunck missing from the front skirt" that sound like $2k right there to fix and you still have the oil issue. I have an 03' 2.5 and love it. great car. but you must remember this is no grand prix... the oil changes cost more, the air filters cost more, tires cost more, do you see what I am saying? Buy one with no problems, you will be much happier. This is the best forum you will ever see. There is alot of great people on here and if you want an X-Type I am sure that someone here will find you a much much better deal.... in the short and long run.

+1 on the RUN AWAY part. I would search...low and behold...look what I found. For about $1400 more(likely negotiable) you can have an 04 with 20K miles LESS. The 04 had most of the glitches worked out, and this one only has a leaper missing not a chunk(~$100, not $2000). If you keep searching, you'll find better deals too.

hhmmm. that's a tough one. Here is what i would suggest. can you get back up there today? check the oil level, check where it might be coming from. how many miles does the car have? Can you take a picture of the missing chunck you talked about and post it? the only thinng i keep thinking is how well the car was maintained. if you don't mind it might be a good idea to see if you can take the car to a Jaguar dealer. It might cost $80-$100 bucks but have them give the car a once over. I am just thinking long run here.... interesting situation

+2 on RUN....the likely downside of repair $$$ handed over to a tech to work on a Jag with an unknown oil leak far outweighs the potential upside. I once had a XJ6 inherited with issues - qualified techs cost too much and value techsoften had no clue (costing more).
I finally had to cut ties with Jag for a while before picking up one without problems (yet).
AutoTrader.com is great for narrowing your search based upon $$/miles/year/model/location...
Good luck...

i would not buy it. That is a costly piece of plastic plus the oil thing...... by the time you are done fixing it all you could have just bought one of the ones we found for you or any other one in better shape. side note: what ever broke that piece of plastic must have hit the car hard! that is not an easy piece to break.....

RE: New guy w/ a few questions
I have broke that piece of plastic just getting out of the car and accidentially hitting it pretty good with my foot when I slipped on some ice!!!
It is just held in with a few plastic clips anyways. Isnt that just the rocker molding I am not sure but is that piece not $230.00???

You are getting good advice here. I would not buy the car, unless you are interested in buying a fixer upper that you fully plan to park in the garage and work on it. If you want a car that you can drive every day, skip this one. The X-Type is a great car and thanks to the fickled market, you can get a great deal on a very nice car that is only a few years old. But this isn't it. Spend a few thousand more and get a car that you can drive without worrying about.
Get you a good X-Type and come back here and join the club!
