Hey folks, I just bought a 2003 x-type 2.5 in great shape. Awesome car, and I'm now a huge Jag fan!
The only problem is it dies when it feels like it with no warning. I've narrowed it down to when driving at a steady rpm for a period of time and it just lays down and dies. Pull over and it usually fires rite back up. Some times it may have to sit for a min or so but always starts back up. No codes are stored.
Like I said, I'm new to Jags and don't know the inner workings yet.
Has anybody got any ideas or thoughts??

 

Jim, from the sounds of things, you have a somewhat common problem with these cars. It is your fuel pump that is more than likely going on you. I would say to look into what a new fuel pump would run you and then go from there. If you can, connect up a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail and then see what the fuel pressure does. It should be around 35-40 psi with the engine running. If you are down around 30 or less, then that would be a sign that your fuel pump is starting to go.

 

Thanks Chris, I was leaning towards a fuel issue but after reading a ton of threads on vacuum issues and sensors I started to second guess the fuel. Odds are you are correct, Idle is smooth and steady and no codes at all so that should rule out the MAF and vacuum issue.
Question for you, is there a better low beam bulb I can run other than stock to enhance the brightness without doing any mods?

Jim, when trying to upgrade the headlights, the ultimate answer is HID bulbs. But, the wiring necessary to do this isn't a straight "unplug a bulb, put in a new bulb". You would end up cutting off the old plug and then wiring in the HID bulb and ballast on each side. Not a hard job, but it will involve pulling the headlight housings out of the car which means pulling the front bumper cover off of the car.

If you just want to replace a bulb, then you can try the Sylvania Ultra Silverstars. They do improve the light output without putting any additional stress on the headlight system. There are a few other bulbs that members recommend, but they are not coming to mind at the moment.
