Default New Member - Starter Motor and DMF issue

Hi just saying Hi I am new to this I own a red Diesel X type, not everybody's idea of a Jaguar but I like it.
I have an issue, I maintain it myself. Two years ago I replaced the D.M.F. with a new one from the net. I also replaced the starter motor but it is now not always engaging and seems to be getting worse. This is an otherwise reliable workhorse. The Starter Motor was brand new but cheap. I have been told to relace the D.M.F. and starter motor. It seems draconian to me and may be if I got an original even 2nd hand starter motor it might solve the problem. Anyone have experience of this, I would be grateful.

Cheers, Hope you all had a good Christmas!

Andy, I guess the first thing that I would be looking at is the battery. How new/strong is it? It is possible that with a weak battery, you can have starter issues. PUtting a multimeter on the starter terminal to monitor the voltage as the starter is engaging will tell you a lot. If you are getting say 12.0+ VDC as the starter is failing to engage, then that pretty much confirms a bad starter. If you are seeing the voltage drop to under 11.0 VDC, then I would move the multimeter back to the battery posts (press them against the lead posts and not touching the battery cable itself). Repeat the starting and if the voltage is again low, you have a bad battery. If the voltage is up around 11.0 or higher, then you have bad battery cables.
