Default New owner and dreaded whine

Hey guys I just bought a 2002 2.5 automatic with 36k on it owned by a old lady and its in prestige condition. Anyways when I was driving it home I noticed the whine would happen whenever I applied throttle but would stop when I let off. I knew nothing about this common problem but was lucky to be searching other things and found out what it is. So I already planned on changing all fluids anyways so I am thankful for all the write ups to save some money just dropped almost 4k so far on new sound system. The temps have been cold here in the 50s on average and I know it happens more in the cold but will I need a new props shaft or will it be ok? I am a little nervous that the deal I thought was a great one will end up being a bad one please help.

If the whine stops when you let off the throttle, it is unlikely to be the propshaft as the propshaft rotates whenever the car moves. Does it whine if you increase rpms in neutral?

Yours is an automatic though. Care to record the whine? Here's mine.

Then it's likely the drivetrain, in my car the whine is very specifically at a certain speed, so the reason yours goes away when you let off the throttle is prolly the slight amount of engine braking slowing the speed by that much.

Mine is indeed mostly acting up when it's cold (below zero celsius), at around zero it may whine for a few seconds when I start driving but then it stops. In colder weather it may whine all day. Yours is likely the carrier bearing just like mine is (likely), apparently harmless but sounds horrid.

I've pretty much verified the effect of outside temperature on the occurrence of the noise, and I can't imagine anything "serious" in the drivetrain that would be caused by such slight temperature differences.

Some have greased the bearing and some of them have found it to have helped. It's next on my to-do list now.
