Default New Rim Pics

Yesterday, I replaced the rims I had on my X (the ones in the sig picture below) with new ones, which are also 18". I actually liked the old rims a lot, just wanted a change. The new rims are very nice and I've gotten a lot of nice compliments from people, but my favorite was from a guy driving an BMW M3 (another of my favorite cars) while we were at a stop light. We actually pulled into a nearby parking lot and talked cars for a few minutes, which was kind of cool.

Anyway, on to the pics...

If the sun ever comes out again, I will take better pics.

Nice choice, they look good. Might I suggest you slap some paint on those calipers now....I painted mine silver and it made a huge difference (I have the same color car and similar rims).

Changed sig picture but hopefully can take some better pics if the sun ever returns.

I am going to paint the calipers when I change the pads and rotors, which will be soon. I have seen lot's of painted calipers that have Jaguar written on them. How do people do that? Is there a template?

Thanks,
Paul

Yes, I've seen the decals and they must be laser cut to be that sharp. They do look very good on the calipers. If you are going to go that far, I would definitely do some smoothing work on the calipers first and work out some of the pitting and bumps from the casting process before you paint. I have probably 6 coats of paint on mine and you can still see plenty of lumps and bumps. I do touch them up in the fall and spring when swapping to the winter or summer set of wheels.

I used a Duplicolor caliper paint product, a hard enamel. Sticks pretty good.

Anyway, the car still looks awesome with those new wheels either way, nice job!! I bet if I saw it in the parking lot I'd try to get in it...looks soo much like mine it's crazy.

Thanks for the info guys. I can't imagine decals would last very long on something that gets that hot. One thing that might work though would be to use the decals as a mask. In other words, paint a section of the caliper where the letter go whatever color you want the letters to be. Then, cover that area with the decals and paint the calipers whatever color you want the calipers to be. Then, remove the decals and underneath should be the letters in a different color. That would be in a perfect world though. Like Chris X said, the pitting alone on the calipers would allow some bleeding of paint under the decals so they wouldn't be as sharp.

Something to think about anyway...

I think if you used some high build clear coat over the calipers you'd probably be ok for a little while. With all the snow and accompanying road salt and chlorides and junk here I don't think they would last a year though. You are probably better off to try to use them as a stencil, good idea.

Beautiful car, - the perfect blend of art and machine, I'd say.
Nice rims - the chrome and the blue (Zircawhatever?) look GREAT together.

Their openness certainly does put the rotors and calipers right out there on display, so the stock cast calipers just don't cut it anymore. I've seen nice powder-coated calipers at Partstrain.com (remanufactured, $400/pair) in red, yellow, Silver or Black.
Their 18" diameter does makes the rotors themselves look a tad small, but i dont know if you can do anything about that.

I have seen those powder coated calipers and they look great. Don't think I want to spend $800 on it though. In their current stock form, it's not too bad because they kind of blend in with the backrgound and I am OK with that.
I agree, the rotors are small, but short of going to a brembo upgrade for $1,200 (which I am not even sure if the rims would fit anymore) I have no problems with how it looks.

My next purchase is going to be a Mina gallery exhaust. I have been emailing Chris at Mina and I have to say he is the kind of person I would want to give my business to. My hold up is deciding which of their two tip choices to use. I love the posche style they have, but wich I could see it on an x-type before ordering.

Paul, when you get a chance, could you post more of a 3/4 front and 3/4 rear shot? I've been eyeing these wheels for a while, but didn't knoow if I'd like the 3/4 profile views of the rims. I love the face of the rims, and the lip, but the severe bend on the spokes is keeping me on the fence. if they were more of a flush fit, I would have bought these already.

Would love to see true 3/4 views of your car to decide for sure.

Thanks!

Talking

Looking nice. Doesn't matter how you mod a car, the wheels make or break it.
