I assume you are talking about buying second hand, not new, right? Auto or manual? 2.5 or 3.0? Spend some time driving the car; most X-Types are reliable with occasional, several minor issues, while there have been a few unlucky, terrible examples of major components failing as well (which is why you should drive and listen to the car before buying).
I personally did not have any major problem with the off-lease, used 2003 X-Type I have.

X Type is one of the most reliable Jags ever in point of my view .Earlier models w/ auto tranny have some problems and can get sorted out .Maintenance can differ . If you are concerned about the fuel costs then go for 2.0 or 2.2 diesel engines (if you don't live in the states) . Gasoline models 2.5 and 3.0close to each other in regards to consumption . I heard 2.1 liter dropped off the model line .
I recommend you AWD versions they make huge difference to FWD .
You will also have to decide what model to get .Sport, Sport Premium, SE, Sovereign ...
Hope you like it

They depreciate so quickly because they're Fords. The FWD X-type that you test drove...wasn't an X-type. All X-types are AWD, and come standard with Power: Windows, Sunroof, Locks, Steering, Seats, ABS, Dual front and side impact air bag.

Hey dac n welcome bud.
Go for the 3.0 as there is very little difference fuel economy wise between that n the 2.5 which is what I have...........in the Sport package.
Beautiful car that will get heads turnin wherever you go!
Good luck with your choices Dac

i have a 2.5 x-type its nota bad car but you can tell they didnt invest alot into the build materials. My car sqeaks and rattles like a cage and need i say it only has 38k miles on it. I had a camaro SS that made less noise when i hit speed bumps. It drives me nuts. The interior is filled with cheap plastic. The dash vents fall off. AWD noise is common. MPG is ok the most of ever got was 27mpg hw. I usually average around 22 with combined. I have a stick and dont know much about the auto except its sealed for life and it is prone to issues. The 2.5 and 3.0 are both ford motors with minor jaguar additions. All in all its a beautiful car just make sure the one your buying works properly. Also the best option is the sport option. also theUS version of the x-type was awd only. SO either thex-type you drove lost its trans axle or it was an s-type.

Hey peewee you ever get the noises fixed I'm pretty sure they were fixed and had a bulletin for that...maybe not and I could be speaking out my ****! Mine doesn't make noise when going over speed bumps except for where my sport suspension needs fixing! Although any car would need fixing it isn't just my suspension or jags fault I have 60k miles

I think earlier model X Type's have some quirks such as falling off the dash vents, key fob problems .Cheap plastic really sucks , ok this is not a VDP nor Daimler but when it comes to Jag you know leather, wood and chrome are must imo .

Mine doesn't squeak or anything like that. Infact that's one of the highlights to the car is how everything seems to be as it should be. No issues as such on mine.

my car sounds like a flock of turkeys. I have no idea where the squeaks are coming from. I dont think its the suspension its either the body pannels in the doors or its the seals. I am not sure. It drives me nuts so i just keep the radio on all the time. At 60k miles your car should still be as solid as a rock. Suspension parts shouldnt wear out that early. My car only has 38k miles on it.
