O2 Sensor - Help please

O2 Sensor - Help please
Hi,
Would really appreciate some help. My engine malfunction light came on and having plugged in the code reader I get P1646 which is Linear O2 sensor control chip (Bank 1).
I have researched on internet and here, and it appears this is the "front sensor on the rear exhaust manifold, and it has a grey connector.
I have looked but cant find it - I have a 2004 X-Type 2.5 (uk). I called the Jaguar dealer but it is £325+VAT+parts which will come to almost £500 which seems so expensive when I can buy the part for about £40.
Any help locating it would be much appreciated. I have loooked under the bonnet (hood) but cant see it! - Thanks

Graham, first off, welcome to the forums, you will find lots of useful information around these parts and tons of people willing to help you out. All that we ask is a "proper" introduction which is nothing more than a posting in the "New Member" section telling us a little bit about you. I think you will find this worth your time and it will help you learn the movers and shakers around here.
As for your problem. If you look on the backside of the engine, you will see a large canister (this is your catalytic converter), you will see an O2 sensor just downstream of the canister and then a second sensor in the canister (up near where the exhaust manifold enters the canister). The one the you are after is the one in the canister itself.

Hi - thanks for the feedback. I have introduced myself in new members section - sorry but I had not understood the protocol.
Thanks for your advice - but still cant see it! Should I be looking from underneath as cant see much from above? -I can only just see the heat shield of the exhaust as it is so tight down there!

Slowly working it out and I have bought the special socket that should hopefully remove it. But am now stuck at the electrical connector. I have disconnected it but the side of the connector connected to the sensor is fixed to the builkhead and I am not sure how to release it.
Can someone tell me what the trick is please? Many thanks

I have now disconnected the electric connector.
Just need to take out the sensor, but cant get proper access. I can get the "special socket tool" engaged on the sensor but the sensor is at a slanted angle and so cant get socket wrench handle etc., on to the end of the "special socket" - Is there a trick? - should I try taking wheel off and accessing from side, it doesnt look like it will help.
Very grateful for any advice - thanks

Graham, are you accessing the one on the front side of the engine or on the rear side of the engine. Front side, you remove the air box and should have pretty good access that way. The rear one, that is a royal PITA. About the easiest way that I can see is to pull the top half of the intake off and go in from the top that way. Accessing from the bottom requires really skinny arms.

Graham, I think you posted this on the UK Jag Forum and you need to be looking at the lambda on the manifold (bulkhead side) not on the cat converter. To me there looks like there's room to do this without the inlet manifold coming off. The other sensor on the cat would need the inlet manifold to come off but that would throw P0037 code.

Yes you are right, its the rear one I am after - with the grey connector (I had code P1646).
I have an idea - I am going to try and buy a flexible crowsfoot spanner to fit around the O2 socket rather than use a socket wrench at the back. It may be difficult to find at a reasonable price as it will need to be about 1 inch. But if I can get it, it may be worth a try. Will let you know ................
