Default obd ii code confusion

my 02 xt has in the past sufferd from gearbox solenoid issues yesterday the dreaded amber mil light pops up, reading the codes it delivers a p1647 code. This is where the confusion kicks in as this code seems to indicate an 02 sensor issue, I cant understand why I lose transmission and the gearbox fault is displayed, I thought that the (P) prefix indicated powertrain.

has anybody either experienced this or can offer any advice

Engine faults can upset the gearbox. Fix the engine problem.

trodat, get your battery load tested and if it is below 75% capacity, replace the battery. We have found that as the battery gets older and weaker, it will cause the computers to start doing strange things and giving you faults that are not really there. Start there and then see what you have.

wish it was that easy have replaced the battery with a lincon only 4 months ago and have replaced the the o2 senosor (original) over the weekend , had the AA round to use their more proffesional code readers but could only get a p1000, which I am not worried about and a p0733 incorrect 3 gear ratio. According to my gear box tech guy when a 3rd gear fault is detected it is often actully 4 that has the fault.
Have been doing some of my own test and have found that 1 and 2 seem to be ok but it detects a GB fault as it hits 3. using my pc software to read OBD2 I pull up a p0778 pressure control sensor, p0733 3 gera ratio, p0734 4 gear ratio and p1000, I am confused by this as surley the pressure control solenoid plays an important role for both 1 and 2 gears.

trodat, keep in mind that with the newer transmissions, the pressure regulator is getting a hell of a work out. It isn't a simple "maintain 1 pressure and be done" piece any more. They are being required to raise and lower pressures based on throttle/load demand, whether sport and non-sport mode is selected, overcoming engineering shortfalls, etc. So, it is very possible that for 3rd gear, the pressure regulator is being asked to do something that with age, it is no longer able to do.

As for replacing the battery, don't assume that because you just installed a new battery that it is good to go. If a battery is going to go, it normally will do it at 2 points in its life, about 5 years in life and within 6 months of it being put in service. hence why I say to get a load test done on it. Atleast in my area, most auto parts places will do a free load test (takes about 5 minutes to do and the battery remains in the car).

Here is a link to additional information related to DTC P1647 on this forum:
p1647 - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum - Threads Tagged with p1647

You can also check the Internet for other sources.

It may be a good idea to check all the wiring and connectors to the oxygen sensors on Bank2 along with the related fuses. The JTIS Workshop Manual has wiring diagrams and is a no-cost download in the 'sticky' section of the forum.
