Which OBD2 reader is best for X type?
hi all, I'm trying to purchase an OBD2 reader for my X Type. I was wondering what OBD2 readers work best and what other X Type owners have? Also any experience you havewith them would be helpful?
I've tried two now and both have failed to connect to my 02 3 litre sport.
Regards...
Alan

RE: OBD2
Hi Striker27, I noticed you recommended this code reader before, but I can't find it for sale anywhere. Do you think it has been superseded by the ET150?
Also I’ve noticed in another post a member said their 03 X-Type is J1850, but checking my pin config last night my 02 model appears to be ISO9141. I’m in Australia so that might explain that.
Does the MACtools scanner read all three OBD2 protocols? Does it have the expanded Jaguar manufacturer specific codes?
Regards...

RE: OBD2
I have been using one purchased: http://obd-2.com/
I have in on my laptop and have been very pleased with it. Connects to my 04 X-Type, 04 Trailblazer and 96 Oldsmobile without any trouble. I really like having the ability to log and playback.

The Mac tools ET 105 scanner I have I think you can get still get off Ebay for fairly cheap from time to time. It is not too bad and reads just generic OBD2 codes not the Jaguar specific ones. I really bought it because it is very simple to use and easily turns off the check engine light in a simple fashion. The ET150 is a little nicer I have used one a few times they can be found cheap on Ebay as well. These are more code readers then scantools though, a nice scan tool from any major manufacture that would support all functions would be many times more expensive. I do prefer a scanner that is constantly giving me data rather then just a snap shot of what is happening which is more of what the ET105 can provide. However as I said that is going to cost you significantly more.
Also try to remember the scanner or code reader is just something to give youinfo on what is going on it does not actually tell you what part to replace and then fix the problem for you. They also do not replace a competent mechanic.

RE: OBD2
Definitely agree with you Striker. I will need to find a trusted mechanic. That's wheremy issue is, finding a mechanic in Sydney Australia, who's eyes don't glaze over (with dollar signs) when they see the badge on my car. Jaguar service techs don't do that (they know what they're servicing), but they treat me like a mushroom on top of charging like wounded bulls.
My battery light came on, so I had the battery checked, of course it was dead and replaced (most expensive battery I ever bought) and then the light came back on. GRRrr.
I'm hoping the reader or scanner will narrow it down a little more than one of the four (or so) lights came on in my dash. I'm not a mechanic but I do know what makes a car run, so it will help me make a more informed decision.
I’ve tried two scanners and neither would connect and both guaranteed me they would. I’m beginning to think that maybe the data stream may be locked or damaged. It’s hard to know for sure because I’m having trouble getting solid information.
