What kind of oil creates sludge? This is why Jaguar is wrong about using Dino oil.

Bahhh...this is ridiculous. I talk about MSDS forms, but nobody replies along those lines. Everyone has pointed out an opinion, however nobody has pointed out actual data. While I am compelled with what the Jaguar letter stated, and go by it, in my humble opinion it's a flimsy approach by the manufacturer.

So I leave this thread with one more thing to say besides checking out the MSDS sheets of your oil, and that is to get an oil analysis done. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/. Last I did it, it was $20. Get yourself some real GS/LC/MS data. It'll explain in-depth of the condition of your engine, and what Blackstone labs suggests your interval should be.

And Dennis, the second link you offer is a poor defense. Firstly, what a pita it was to read his post. Who capitalizes every first letter of each word??? [&:] Secondly, we don't know what oil he used and it seems that he did an extended drain interval of 10k miles. I don't care what you're using. You're a moron if you extend your interval to 10k miles w/o knowing what the oil is doing in the engine. Which comes back to my original argument, know what the oil is doing in your engine i.e. get an oil analysis and know the chemical composition of the oil.

For the argument of Jaguar suggesting 10k miles intervals, I think this is again a "wishy washy" attempt by Jaguar, as Bojangles said it best. A.) They save themselves money for the 50k mile warranty free oil changes. B.) They attempt this very high interval mileage and save further money by using a synthetic blend, which most experts argue is nothing but a marketing ploy by most oil manufacturers. The argument of not using a full synthetic is asinine, given that the dealerships use a synthetic blend.

So for those of you totally aloof,

1.) Contact your dealership and verify what they want you to use. It's quite obvious what the choice is if a full synthetic voids your warranty.

2.) If you don't have a warranty. Do your research and decide what you want to use. Be sure to fully explore the oil (best sources are BITOG, bob is the oil guy, for information). Like I said, earlier, I was a M1 fan, until I learned of it being a group III base.

3.) Regardless, of what you use, do a oil analysis. It's a cheap method of determining the condition of your engine.
