Oil Grade for High Mileage 2.2d Engine
Hi guys, I recently purchased an X-Type 2.2 diesel with 165,000 miles on it.
As I always do when first getting a car, I had it fully serviced.
The manual says to use 5w30 engine oil but my father, who does our auto work for us, was told by the shop that supplies his parts to use 20w50 (mineral oil) as indicated in some reference information they were using.
The oil was bought, installed and the car driven before i noticed the oil rating on the drum of spare oil my father left in the boot of the car.
After, as before, the engine is pulling beautifully up through all gears but this large variation oil grades has made me worry.
Is this acceptable oil for the 2.2d engine? Will it have any negative effect? Should i drain and replace with 5w30?
Does anyone have recommendations regarding oil grades and types for higher mileage examples of these engines?
Thanks in advanced for your help.

Hi. Your mileage is not excessively high for this engine if well serviced.
I would use the recommended oil and synthetic.
I do not base this on any scientific knowledge just experience with this Ford diesel engine

My 2.2d has approx. 142,000 miles on it now, and I use 5w30 full synthetic oil.
Apparently full synthetic is known to cause weak oil seals to leak more compared to mineral oil, so keep an eye out for any leaks.
Paul.
