reccomended oil grade for x-type 2006 ??
Hi all, sorry for the newbie question here.
Just purchased X-type 3.0l petrol V6 2006 model.
looking at doing an oil filter and oil change imidiately, as just a precaution to just having purchased car.
i dont have any servcie manuals for X-type 2006. If anyone has any, PLEASE can you PM me.
I have been able to find JITS, i think older version 17? which only covers x-type info till 2003 model.
In this old jits it recomends oil of 5W-30 for the x-type 2003 model.
When took the 2006 X-type to a mechanic for inspection prior to purchase, asked him what oil and he said 0W40, so i went out and purchased Castrol Edge 0W-40.
Now, anyone know the official recomended oil grage for x-type 2006 3.0 V6 engine please ??
if go ahead and use the Castrol 0W-40 grade, is there any risk of damage to car?
thanks

Bill, I know this might sound funny, but look at the top of the oil fill cap. The recommended weight from Jag should be printed right there. You will find that running either 5W-30 or 5W-20 will be recommended. For the summer I would say run the 5W-30. During the winter, may be advantageous to run the 5W-20 since it is slightly thinner.
Doing a quick look, I can't see whether the 0w-40 is a synthetic, mix, or not (since it isn't saying, I would have to guess it is a standard dino oil-ie, non synthetic). You shouldn't have any issues running this oil in your car. What you may see is a slight drop in your gas mileage due to the oil pump having to work a little harder to pump the thicker oil. We are not talking a major drop, but a few tenths is not uncommon. This is the reason why a lot of the manufacturers are going with the thinnest oil that they can. Trying to squeeze each MPG that they can out of the engine. If in doubt, check out a website called "Bob is the Oil Guy". This guy knows more about oil and what not than you could ever think of knowing. You should find all the details you want.

Its Castrol Magnatec 5w-30
In the handbook it says Jaguar recommend Castrol
On the Castrol website if you enter your cars registration number (UK only) it brings up the oils for the different parts of your car and the capacities.
Alternatively you can download the handbook online from
http://www.ownerinfo.jaguar.com/extf...prod/index.jsp
Edit
Just read the USA handbook for MY2006.25MY and it says
SAE Viscosity Rating

SAE Viscosity Rating
- For climates ranging from -30°C ( -22°F) to +50°C
(+122°F), the following oil viscosities may be used:
0W-30
5W-30 (preferred)
0W-40
5W-40
0W-30
5W-30 (preferred)
0W-40
5W-40
Note: For maximum fuel economy, 5W-30 oil is recommended.
It is recommended that the oil level is topped up using oil of the same viscosity.
If you are unsure which oil viscosity is used in your car, your Jaguar Dealer will be able to advise.

yes your both right, the recomended one 5W-30 is printed on the oil filler cap ...doohh, took off few times to check and smell the oil but not read the words.
changed used the 0W-40 as an flushing change, as all i had over the easter break, will run it for manybe a month as a flush and then drop it and change to 5W-30.
thanks
