Default Oil Leak

I have my X for about 3 weeks now and found an oil leak. It looks like it could be comming fron the axel seal area on the passenger side. Its dripping on the exhaust right where the manifold bolts on to the rest of the exhaust. The smell tipped me off, as i had been checking for leaks since the dealer took care of a small leak at the oil pan before i took the car. That leak stayed dry. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Get under thecar and clean it. You should then drive it and look again to see where it is coming from.

i wud agree with FJT .. but if your missing the transfer case cooling duct the trasfer box fluid can overheat and come out of the vent..

jag_genius i think you got it right. The transfer case cooling duct is missing and the first time we noticed the leak was on a longer ride. The short trips my wife takes to work and the store didn't make it heat up and leak. I just ordered a new one from the dealer......should be here in a few days. Ill let you know how i make out. My next concern is how much oil is missing and should i change it because of the heating issue.

IS THIS SMELL PRESENTING ITSELF AFTER A GOOD RIDE? DO YOU SMELL OIL BURNING THREW THE VENTS WHEN THE RECYCLE BUTTON ON THE AC IS TURNED OFF? I JUST HAD MY TRANSMISSION REPLACED NOT TO LONG AGO AND I SMELL THIS. I LOOK UNDER THE CAR AND I SEE NO LEAKS. WHERE CAN I LOOK TO SEE WHERE THE SMELL IS COMMING FROM. INSIDE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF OIL LEAKING. INPUT WOULD BE GREAT.

ON A SECOND NOTE YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN RIGHT ON THE MONEY SAVING ME HARD EARNED CASH. WITHOUT THIS SITE AND THE TECHS THAT PUT IN THIER FREE ADVICE. I WOULD THINK MY X TYPE WOULD BE ON BLOCKS RIGHT NOW. THANKS TO ALL THAT KEEP THIS SITE GOING.

Please dont type in caps like that. Not easy on the eyes.
If you smell it after long ride, likely oil pan gasket leaking or residual oil on cat from oil change.

Also, if you smell it but dont see it, possible cam cover leak at back of motor. Look with mirror and flash light.

Update: Short drives 9 to 12 miles had no leak from the transfer case. As soon as we took it past that point it started leaking. I got the cooling duct and put it on yesterday. The old one must have been ripped off cuza piece ofplastic was still under the bolt. I wounder how many people are missing this with out even knowing it? After spending some time under the car....a lot of heat comes from the exhaust and is sooo close to the transfer case and oil pan. Whats your thoughts on wrapping the exhaust with heat wrap....to keep things cooler down there. We are taking a longer drive today so we will see if the cooling duct helps. I'll keep you posted.

Ok.... cooling duct in place.....put heat wrap on exhaust to help keep it coolerand itstill leaks. The oilseems to be coming from the vent area.I still need to drainand put in new oil, but i'd be surprised if that solved this problem. I also took the header wrap off...oil soaked header wrap is not good.....dont want to burn my x up. Bojangle exhaust looks oily in the same place as mine. Running out of ideas.

i had the coupler replaced on mine due to a leaking seal. Sounds like the same problem you are having and it never came back. Mine was under warranty, but it seems very simple and i wouldnt be afraid to tackle it. Just depends if your a DIY person.

ok guys in my case it was a very simple one. near the outputof the transfer caseand drive shaft there is some sort of boot held by a clamp. what had happend that the clamp cam loose and inside the boot hold grease, so as the drive shaft spins it was slinging gease all over the exhaust pipes. so new boot and tighten clamp, more grease (not in that order) and all she wrote. Thanks

Default RE: Oil Leak

Im finally got around to changing the oil in my transfer case. It went well and the oil looked like everybody elses (DARK). I was thinking about how to get the oil out that doesent come out at the plug, so i thought about my hand vac i use to bleed brakes. I used new tubing so no chance of cross contamination and had to reduce to a smaller dia tubing to get by the gears to the bottom of the case. It worked very well and got 225ml out with the vac. I got a total of 525ml of oil out. So my leak could not have been too bad. We will see if it leaks again on long rides. I posted pics of the oil that i got out...300ml by the drain plug and 225ml with the vac pump. I also got the usuall amount of sluge on the magnet plug. First time posting pics so i hope it works. I also hope the hand vac idea helps out, it really did work well. Thanks
