Oil Level

Oil Level
Hi Everyone,
I'm a new X-Type owner. I picked up my X-Type yesterday from the dealer and it just had its oil changed. When I checked the oil level on the dipstick, it was reading just past the 'X' on the word MAX. In the owners manual it looks like the level should be in between the cross pattern (before the word MAX). I was just wondering if up past the word MAX is where the level sits when the required 5.8 as the manual suggests is put in or if the dealer just accidentally over-filled it. Looking at the manual, I feel the level should be reading in that cross pattern, well above the minimum as it does on most vehicles. Thanks for the clarification.

Jon, as long as you are not hearing the oil getting splashed around inside the engine from the crank having to pass through the oil, I would not worry about it. Another check that you can do is with the engine running, pull out the dipstick. If the oil is frothy (very bubbly) on the end of the dipstick, then the crank is hitting the oil. Otherwise, leave the oil as is and add in the necessary amount on the next oil change.

I think it is always best to have a bit less oil than more. Then the oil pressure will be less and save on seals and gaskets that will fail with too much oil. I had this issue with the dealership too that eventually led to them draining the excess oil as requested. From a dealership perspective I can see why the don't mind overfilling as it leads to more work for them down the road.

Do you feel that the pressure caused the pan to leak or from it being over filled. Is that just a Jaguar trate for the oil pan to leak or is it caused by other problems with the Jaguar. I was a heavey equipement machanic almost all my life and if the pan was leaking it was from some kind of internal problem. I've found from reading this form that the Jaguar being a great car, it's a very touchie car too.
