Default Oil Level

Hi Everyone,
I'm a new X-Type owner. I picked up my X-Type yesterday from the dealer and it just had its oil changed. When I checked the oil level on the dipstick, it was reading just past the 'X' on the word MAX. In the owners manual it looks like the level should be in between the cross pattern (before the word MAX). I was just wondering if up past the word MAX is where the level sits when the required 5.8 as the manual suggests is put in or if the dealer just accidentally over-filled it. Looking at the manual, I feel the level should be reading in that cross pattern, well above the minimum as it does on most vehicles. Thanks for the clarification.

Jon, as long as you are not hearing the oil getting splashed around inside the engine from the crank having to pass through the oil, I would not worry about it. Another check that you can do is with the engine running, pull out the dipstick. If the oil is frothy (very bubbly) on the end of the dipstick, then the crank is hitting the oil. Otherwise, leave the oil as is and add in the necessary amount on the next oil change.

Dealer did this when I bought my 2002 X type in 2005 (trainee changed oil) the oil level was about a cm above max IIR
Dealer collected car from my work drained the excess and checked the compression to make sure no damage done
All OK luckily!

I think it is always best to have a bit less oil than more. Then the oil pressure will be less and save on seals and gaskets that will fail with too much oil. I had this issue with the dealership too that eventually led to them draining the excess oil as requested. From a dealership perspective I can see why the don't mind overfilling as it leads to more work for them down the road.

I appreciate the feedback. I ended up taking out over a litre of oil to get the level back into the appropriate range. I'll be doing my own oil changes from now on. Thanks for the comments.

The oil pan can and will leak if you look at it funny, regardless of how much oil it contains.

IIRC, there were some posts in the past from members who experienced decreased fuel economy due to slightly overfilled oil level.

Do you feel that the pressure caused the pan to leak or from it being over filled. Is that just a Jaguar trate for the oil pan to leak or is it caused by other problems with the Jaguar. I was a heavey equipement machanic almost all my life and if the pan was leaking it was from some kind of internal problem. I've found from reading this form that the Jaguar being a great car, it's a very touchie car too.

I can't say for sure but there was a lot more droppings when oil level was high, now when oil is in normal level, oil pan is almost dry.
