Default oil pan reseal $1660?

Have a fairly small but persistent oil leak. Dealer says need an oil pan reseal, $1660. Says it is very labor intensive, have to drop exhaust, AC compressor, transfer case... My regular dealer and they have always been fair with me but this seems expensive. Any comments to this?

Also says I am leaking grease from my right front axle boot. $625 to replace that. I haven't seen or felt any problems here. Should I get it fixed now or wait, since I have to layout so much $$$$ for the oil pan?

2005 with only 52000 on it. Add about 200 miles a month probably, sometimes less.

Thanks

Tarheel, if you do a search on here about teh oil pan you will find out that it is, indeed, very labor intensive. The biggest reason is bacuse of the transfer case. Some people have ground off part of the case to access the oil pan easier. Not sure if that is a good idea or not. Do some readong and then make the call. If you put something under your car to catch the drips it won't hurt anything as long as your oil level is good..

I personally would take care of the leaking halfshaft first before teh oild pan.

+1 Alfadude is right it is a lot of work to get at the one hidden fastener on the oil pan. If you are a do it your-selfer you can follow the recommendations below and save a bunch. If not fix that grease leak and keep adding oil.

Interesting. Thanks for the response. I asked the same question on my X-Type Owner's group in Facebook and they said the dealer was way overpriced. Maybe they didn't understand what was being done, but I used the exact terms in the posting that I used here.

They kept referring to the sump but I just assumed that was the British term for the oil pan. Anyone know why they would think it was an easy fix for a few hundred dollars? Or are the repair rates just that much more in the US?

There are two trains of thought.
ONE is to drop the subframe and transfer case and the OTHER is to drill a large hole in the transfer case webbing to gain access to the bolt in the pan that is otherwise inaccessible.

Both work!!!! I have done it BOTH ways.
Drilling easier but I ALWAYS ask the customer and give them the OPTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!

Tarheel, That's a lots of money for a $50-$70 oil pan gasket, but unless spend couple of days DIY then you save $1600, If you have no tools and don't know how to do it then just have to spit the bucks out. The dealer garage probably charged you @ $200/hr. go to a trusted small import garage they might charge you @ $70-$100/hr. Most of members in this forum do the work themselves, you should do the same, beside the money saving, you'll learn a whole lots of knowledge here, even if you have to bring your car to the dealer at least you knew what are they talking about.

thanks for the replies. I went with the dealer for the axle boot, price quotes I got were negligible. I found a local shop that has offered to do the oil pan for $895 total. Too much of a difference to pass up. So I will keep an eye on it and when I get the funds take it to them and see how they do with it.
