Default Oil in Water, Not water in oil

Hi Everyone
I have a 2004 X-type 2.0 Diesel that has sludgy gunk from oil in water system but no sign of water in the oil.
Is this a cracked head or gasket??
Wouldn't I have frothing in the oil?
The sump and top of motor is clean!!

On that model is the radiator tank also used to cool powersteering fluid or transmission fluid? If that is the case and any of the joints within the tank leaks, you will see a mix of oil in the coolant.

If you catch it early enough and change the radiator, usually no harm done to the other systems. To get the oil out you can fill with water and dish detergent, run for a while and dump it out before flushing with water, then filling with coolant.

Hello plums
thank you for the reply
Luckily only 100 metres from home the temp shot up and when I stopped water was gushing out the side of the water reservoir tank and filled (along with all lines and hoses on the water side) with thick grey gunk.
The car is a manual so no tranny to worry about and the power steering is clean as new.
Hmmmmm.

When oil is pumped into the coolant, from whatever source, the oil is under pressure. The remaining oil at the source remains unchanged because it is on the high pressure side.
