Belt tensioner has a tight spring built into it that keeps "tension" on the belt and pump. Serves two purposes, keeps the belt tight at the appropriate tension and keeps it from slipping off the pulley. I'm gonna guess the recommended belt change interval is 60K? Maybe 80K tops on some models (which is pushing it) anyway.I replace all my belts at 50K reguardless...my anti freeze every 3 years, brake fluid at every brake change, trnas fluid every 3 years. I'm old school I guess.
The spring gets weak and does not provide the accurate tension against the pump. This will cause slippage and may cause more problems like the belt flying off....
My advice is, why not change it? You're doing all the work; everything is apart....what’s another 25 bucks to make it right?
Once again, why do it 1/2 a$$
Just my 12 cents worth. (I don't come cheap)

I dont technically understand why the tensionner would get weaker? the spring needs to operate in the elastic range of the stress strain curve... if it was going to yeild, then it would not be designed properly. (hahaha well it is a jag after all)
Maybe the bearing will eventualy fail, but not likely the spring.
I think that Jag has a good service schedule according to the manual.
why stray from that? the waterpump belt is due around 100k miles...

Amen brother, and that's all I’m saying....The service schedule is designed as a guide for normal driving folks with regular maintenance schedule intervals...i.e. 10, 20, 30, 40K .....Miles inspections....this is where they would hopefully catch an early failure of some part....
But as we know....it doesn't work out that way....
You mean to tell me you would trust a plastic/rubber belt up to 100K??? If you do, you're a better man....
I'm the kind of guy that would spend the extra 25 bucks to get all the parts replaced....and not worry about it....spend 25 now or 2500 when the belt slips, overheats your aluminum head and cracks it??
But, to each his own...

Yeah I guess! Couple of exceptions though 1) Don't end up in the hospital (at least yet) 2) haven't had any fires (yet) well I haven't my dad did start a van on fire....wasnt' me though his idea 3)Don't have a coffee mug with my name on it at the hospital! Lot more careful than I have to be-alright I'm **** ok are you happy!
I spoke with a friend of mine that had an S-type and replaced the #2, 4, and 6 cylinder coils since they are the easiest to get to and it threw his timing way off. It caused for him to loose a lot of gas mileage and he had a lot of misfires. I'd think twice about doing the job half-a$$ed if I were you for more than one reason man! It might cost you a lot more in the short AND long run! I though that the car would simply not respond as well, but it turns out to be more than that.

the tension is not adjustable and there is no spec in the manual . not sure how you are going to check the tension.
I also wanna let people know that there is some credibility out there in teh car biz... not lots but some.
now fluid drain intervals have increased over the past 10-15 years. Some of this due to technical advances. Some not.
BMW for example used to have one of the most rigourous maintenance schedules. then they suddenly changed it to "all maintenance included" and doubled the recommended intervals.
It has caused a glut of dead cars in teh used car market. BMW used to last forever, but they used to have serious maintenance.
The Jag schedule is quite good still. I dont see how increasing the frequency of maintenance will give much payback in our case.
5-10 k km oil changes, and 2 year brake fluid , antifreeze and transmission oil changes would make a great schedule.
Now the credibility thatI referred to is the little belt for the water pump....
Jag does test the life of the belt. They do not want it to break on you. they test it in all kinds of conditions (well maybe the belt maker does) and they come up with a safe and recommended time to change it.
My belt looked to be in perfect condition. It is very easy to change yet a very expensive belt. (for what it is - a terrible rip off) the tension is not very high, and the belt runs over quite big pulleys and also runs at half the engine RPM.
I think good maintenance is critical but some financial and environmental responsibility is needed to make intelligent decisions.
Every part you change unnecessarily and every drop of oil that you drain out, is part of YOUR footprint on this planet.
I know the americans have difficulty with this concept. Even recycling has an impact, it helps but does not eliminate the problems.
hahah all this for a little belt... hahhah

I know what you mean about us Americanos not giving two craps about the planet! After all we are by far the largest consumer of natural resources. But in my defense, I recycle all of my plastics, paper and bottles. I'm a ***** about my car though! I do oil changes every 2500 miles. I recycle that oil! I do tranny fluid changes every 6 months! I recycle that oil as well. I change belts 10K miles before estimated life span and I take my coolant to be changed at a shop because I don't know how to dispose of it properly! I'm no tree hugger, but I hate the American way of life that doesn't give two craps about our one and only home planet! I wish things could be different for everyone else!
Well guys I got the Pump and Thermostat for free in exchange forrepairing the guys laptop.
[/align]I will put the parts on this week! I miss the Jag already....im running out of "fun" on the Mustang right now.
