note: the thermostat has been replaced about 3-6 months it is a 2002 jaguar x-type 3.0 sport

So this sounds a lot like a crack in the head near an exhaust opening up and pressurizing the coolant system, - the blowing tank, excess pressure not being able to be vented before the cap itself vented.
