Got the grooved / drilled discs out and decided to paint them up before fitting to car.
Don't you just hate it when you get that rusty look on the outside edges and the little groove at the edge of the braking surface?

Here's the discs and the products / method used.
Firstly used masking tape to cover the braking surfaces and then used a razor blade to get a nice finish on the edge.
Then the 1st coat of Hammerite smooth black was applied to the hub and outer edges. Note: When I taped it up I left a small section on the inner side of the braking surface that will get taken off as the brakes are applied. It should give a nice smooth finish to it. On the vented discs I painted the inside of the vents too as they will start to look rusty as well otherwise.
They'll be left to dry hard o/nite and then a second coat will be applied.







More to follow as and when they get their second coat. I'ce decided on EBC Redstuff pads

These should really look great against the discs when fitted.
The only question I haven't made up my mind yet ( bearing in mind the car is ST in Panther black ) whether to paint the calipers Red or black?
I'm leaning towards Red....Please let me have your thoughts on this one?

I'll also be usingwhat known commonly ( as the310 approach )and cleaning and then painting all linkages tierods etc etc to complete the look.

Just my advice, keep the calipers a classic black. With those RED pads on there, it'll draw attention no matter what. With the calipers red also, that may be alittle over the top my friend. But maybe that's the kind of guy you are...BAM...there it is, look at me! (maybe not?)

 

Having them on mine (red calipers and red pads) paint the calipers red as you wont see much of the pads.Breaks the monotony of the blackness up too[&:]

Thanks h20 for the advice mate. I've seen your car and it looks like a clean stock car...very nice.
I've decided on Red calipers with red pads ( just ordered EBC Redstuff ) and will fit them as soon as time n weather allows. I'm not a BAM....look at me kinda guy, well, no more than anyone else anyway...lol
The car is black with a slight blackish window tint. I'm not too much into black cars with blacked out headlights, tail lights, windows etc etc etc either.....sometimes a little contrast ( thats all it is, looks really nice )

I think they'll especially nice as a contrast against the black.

No, they're brakes for crying out loud!

Looking good, man. As for calipers, I would paint them black and the etch the words "TDI" in white. That would be cool.

K, here's the discs / rotors all painted n cleaned up ready to go
Just waiting for the Redstuff pads to be delivered now ( Tuesday I think it should be ) and I'll be good to go.
I'm quite pleased with the results and think that they'll look good on the car

Good job Jim..I don't know what kind of paint you used..but that will keep them looking clean and sharp, for many miles to come..

 

Thanks Dennis....just used Hammerite smooth black for them. It really is a good product and many people use it for this purpose.
The calipers though will be getting the red brake caliper paint bought specially for them...hopefully sometime soon, but the weather is terrible here right now[&:]

I never got around to asking you Jim...Where is "HERE" for you anyway?..After a little snow here, daybefore yesterday..today is sunny and 65° F, just got through cutting grass in my yard. (thought I'd rub that in a little.[sm=icon_stickpoke.gif])

 

My wife has a 2007 GTi that is black with red calipers from the factory. The contrast is awesome.

Don't talk to me bout cuttin grass, used to be late September for the last cut n you were fine. Mine carried on growin till bout Mid-Late Oct but it was way too wet to cut. So, its been long n straggly all winter[&:]

Jim those look great....I am now wishing I had done the disc centers also...youwill love those discs w/ the EBC RedStuff...they are very noisy just rolling, having now put on the rears, I hear the sound from front and rear....all the more reason to get the Borla's on there!

One other thought for you on the pads....the front shims are metal (and black) so you may want to paint those red with your caliper paint or cut them if you have a method to. The rear shims arecutable with scissors/utility knifeand easy to match the pad/caliper...

310 - I hope it reminds you of when you done yours as I'm following your excellent post in an effort to try and achieve the same high standard that you showed us.
I thought it was a top class method and a great write up with the pics too
I'm gonna do a write up as well with some pics so it'll probably be similar I guess with maybe a few ideas / alterations of mine thrown in...( lol .....we'll see on that one )
The pads are commin on Tuesday and I can't wait to fit them, for 2 reasons.
1 - The current setup isn't that great and although there is life left in the pads n rotors I want them changed ASAP
2 - To see just how good they look

Ideally though -I'd like to be able to have 2 days or so of decent weather when I didn't need the car and be able to get the wheels off, thoroughly wash down the whole setup and get on with painting all the linkages, tierods etc. A good scrub of the wheel well liners finished off with some Sonus tyre dressing Gel and Sonus Total Eclipse and then fit the discs / rotors n pads for a complete look. Unfortunately we don't live in an ideal world so it'll have to be done in stages I'm afraid.

Just like a nice clean ride. There's nuthin better than cruisin with your car just lookin grrrreat

But, cos I try n keep em like that. I just spent come time cleaning the A6. A wash n dry with microfibre towels, did all the door shuts, used alloy wheel cleaner and really got into the grooves, blacked the tyres n mudflaps, a quick detail of the interior and a vacuum. Opened up the bonnet / hood and cleaned all the engine covers etc etc.Only took around an hour n 20 mins to get it absolutely gleaming cos I stay on top of it.
