Part Numbers
Because I like playing with cars I was planning to change my transfer case oil the JTIS way but I have run into a problem.
The manual says to remove the drive pinion housing to drain the oil and then replace the O-ring on the pinion housing. My ******* does not show such a part being available.
Has anyone done this- is there a replacement ring?

RE: Part Numbers
I also went to a dealer for that oring.. the parts guy said he never has ordered one... this leads to two questions.
do the dealers do the 90% oil change from the pinion? (and dont replace the oring as they should)
or do they use the drain plug and only do a 60% oil change?

Fact of the matter is Bo, The dealers just simply don't change the TC fluid..My dealer was very much sold on the Filled for Life BS..
Brutal..I get exactly your feelings..People have a habit of painting the whole dealership with a wide brush of discontent..I have nothing but the highest respect for my dealership's service, they have ALWAYS treated me right....Now the Parts dept., well that's another story

RE: Part Numbers
Fill port on the transfer case??. I have had mine on the dining room table. and the only other port is on the top, and there is no way to get at it when the case is in the car. Still not sure how you know how much oil you got out with the suction.. and therefore how can you be certain of exactly how much oil ot put in? Seems to me that the amount is fairly important.
It seems strange,BRUTAL that you have been here witnessing the long long long and endlesss chit chat about TC oil, yet your dont offer any opinion or advice?

RE: Part Numbers
CAUSE FOR THE MOST PART, THE ONLY TIME WE SEE XTYPES IS FOR EXTENDDED WARRANTY REPAIRS. WHICH MEENS IF A TC GOES OUT WE REPLACE IT. I HAVE AN X RIGHT NOW THAT IS TYPICAL OF WHAT I SEE, LOTS OF PROBLEMS AND MAINTENACE NEEDED BUT NO $$$ TO DO IT.
BESIDES, YA'LL SEEM TO BE DOING JUST FINE. AND SOMETIMES ASSUMPTIONS HAVE TO BE MADE. IF I SUCK OUT THE TC, I CANT SEE IN, TRUE, WHILE I COULD SUCK THE FLUID INTO A MEASURING CUP, ITS TOO MESSY AND TIME CONSUMING.
SO I JUST HAVE TO ASSUME THAT IF I SUCK IT OUT, FOR THE MOST PART ITS EMPTY. REFILL AND YOURE DONE.

RE: Part Numbers
even if you captured what you sucked out.. you dont know what you left in the case?
From what we the owners have had to learn and figure out ALL ON OUR OWN!!>>>> :
the drain plug leaves 200 ml behind
removing the rear pinion housing leaved 50ml behind.
with that knowledge, we can decide how much to refill. Also you did not answer how you refill it at the dealer? What is the big deal about telling the others what you do there?
keep in mind also. that the original poster asked about the O-ring!
If you dont like being called a *******.. then why do you allow these cars to dive to self destruction? If not the dealer's responsibility to give sound advice and offer good maintenance, then who's is it?

RE: Part Numbers
Bo, you know, I just spent 20 minutes thinking about and typing out a response to your a little overly personal pointed statment to me above. Only to have the imfamous error message pop up when I went to post. So heres the short of it, Im here to learn and share help, You have shared info I didnt know on TC flushes and yet you accuse ME of causeing the cars to self destruct from not offering good advise? WTF, whos on here for no pay sharing years of experiance and inside knowledge for what!!!!!
It sure aint any $$$$$$$ so think about that next time you want to blast what 1 of a handful of techs on here that try to help...I can see why techs leave forums, they get blasted for whatever pent up frustration you or others have towards dealers....And this isnt the first time Ive been personally attacked. We dont remove the output housing, that why that parts guys never sold any of those orings. and its an oring. orings if undamaged can be reused if neccessary whether you agree with this or not, put some hylaseal on it just to be even more confident. And the same tool we use to suck out, when reversed can also put new fluid right back in. And why should I recommend a transfere case flush, tranny, radiator etc when I cant get Xtype owners to replace bald tires, repair broken and bent suspension components chewing up tires, metal to metal brakes etc...Why should I even waste more time to write a bigger estimate when they cant affgord to maintain the safty of their car?????
1 more question. How helpful would you be if I just referred to everyone in your business as a thief?

RE: Part Numbers
Brutal... where on earth do you read that I insulted you? it is just not there. I am trying to learn from you.. not criticiseyou.
You need to get in check with reality (dont take that as a mean statement) ... dealers did not get their reputaion from nothing. We all love and respect YOU (brutal) for your help here. Dont everthink that a tech's help here is not appreciated. In fact the very presence of you here isthe best thing you can do to help the reputationof the dealers. There are endless stories of dealers screwing over customers. We interface with the service guy behind the desk and not with the techs.
I dont for a second believe the tech are doing bad work or purposely doing anything wrong. BUT and a big huge broad brush BUT... the customers are getting screwed over. for example.. a tech may say to the service guy, "brakes with 50% life left, measured, tested etc...." and then the service guy says to the customer...."your brakes are finished.. you need new ones" then the service guy says to the tech " the customer wants new brakes" Your word as the tech does not easily reach the customer.
I see the hand written notes on the shop floor copy of a dealer work order, and I try to ask and see what the tech wrote down.. and the service guy wont let me see it... They play games with us.
Forgive me for asking you questions that are challenging. Forgive me for typing the word "you" I did not mean YOU brutal, I meant "why do dealers allow the cars to drive to self destruction?" it is a very valid question. and it is not an insult to you, Brutal.
There is enough evidence to show that X-types NEED the transfer case oil changed. yet the Dealers just dont recommend doing it. The dealers (service guy) just tells us that we need an entire new case when it fails.
The last dealer I went to told me that they will not change a seal when a TC leaks... because they dont want to risk standing behind the labour if the case leaks again. They wont change a 20 dollar seal, they insist on a multi thousand dollar new transfer case.
Common.. dont take it so personally about the word *******.... There are enough stories and experiences to merit the use of the word. It is not mean to harm you personally.
I mean geeze.. they quoted me 90 frigging dollars for a litre of differential oil at my dealer...... PLUS TAX!
I still would like to know how you at the dealer manage to refill the TC? you say you use the suck thing and make it into a pump thing, but you need to put in 400ml above the drain plug level. How do you get the oil in , and the plug back in place?

RE: Part Numbers
, im sorry, I was just really pissed after spending all that time on my first response and forgot to save, only to loose the whole thing when I went to post. But yes, I am alittle sensitive on the whole *********** thing, cause we get stolen from too. Guess who gets to eat labor on harder jobs to diag??? yep me, You put hours into diag problematic car only to be short paid, and straight time is a looser to, so to be short paid is even worse. But not only that, I work very hard to counter that very thing, which takes alot of personalized time and effort that doesnt directly help the doolars in my pocket, but I do it beacause thats just me and I sympathize with that whole autorepair industry thing, not just dealers. and to answer the original question is jack of the left of the car about 2' from the ground to the body sill and you can get more than enough oil in the left side of the case...see now wasnt that easy!!!

So you drain the TC by removing the plug, then remove what doesn't drain by gravity (~200 ml?) with suction. Is there any special trick to snaking a suction tube into the drain hole?
And filling the TC through the drain (with 550 ml?) is just a matter of jacking the drivers side (only) by several inches then pumping in the oil?
Wow, I wish I had a spare TC to play with!
Brutal, we do appreciate your input and insight. Please feel free to share any other time-saving techniques!

RE: Part Numbers
oopps sorry I ment 2 feet not inches or 540mm to be more precise. And I have fashioned a piece of hard plastic tubing into a hook with a heat gun to fit into the TC plug opening. then hook to this tool I use to vac/and fill

You can make a smaller container with fitting from Home Depot to use in smaller amounts and even measure.
