Early morning starts my x-type has a grinding and whining sound until I drive her for a minute-or-two and it goes away....

I assume a bad transfer case is a 'constant' noise, so I'm assuming it's something else... Plus I just had the Transfer case drained and refilled.

Mine does the same thing. i think the noise that sounds like a bomb dropping from the sky is the drive shaft. there is a write up on this site that shows how to lube it. the grinding may be the brakes. mine do this at first from i think what would be rust from rain or snow the night before... that"s my best guess.
