Plastidip my car?
So, my paint currently sucks and is getting worse with each passing day. I was going to pull the bumpers and trunk and respray them, but I researched a bit about plastidip and I think I'm in love. The only issue now is that I don't know what color to go with. The best part about this is that if I spray it and don't like it, I just peel it away and my stock paint is left untouched. I was thinking of maybe doing something crazy like going with a blue plastidip (it's matte) with some anthracite dip on my wheels. The only issue is that this whole idea could either look really amazing on an xtype or look terrible on an xtype. Because nobody has a matte xtype out there, I was wondering what everyone thought about the idea and the paint scheme? I would outline the grill and other accents with the black or anthracite dip. Just curious what people think and if anyone has ever even seen a matte xtype.
Disguay, I think your bigger issue will be the thickness of the plastidip. I know the stuff we use at work is fairly thick and it will pretty much fill all the gaps between the trunk and the body and the gaps for the doors.
As for a matte finish, can't be any worse than some of the paint jobs I have seen. Do say the trunk and then see what you think.

Thermo, the new plasti dip is amazing. I am confident in the quality of the plasti dip, just looking for some cosmetic ideas right now. I know that the dip will go on perfect and if it doesn't, there is a way to flatten it out which is really simple.
For the curious...

I've heard that unless you apply it in a very specific manner, it's a major pain to peel off. I think it's two thin coats and a heavy coat, but don't quote me on that, and even then it can be messed up making it difficult to "peel" off.
As far as the idea goes... I don't personally think anything I've seen plasti-dipped looked good. I'm also not a fan of the matte/flat/satin fad. That's just my opinion though.

This van was at a car meet recently and someone mentioned it was plastidipped. Looks like they did a good job. If they can pull it off, I dont see why you couldnt. Good luck and post pics when you are done.
... re: Plastidip - I think that would look sweet. How much does it cost?
And how does it work if you have a few small areas of rust just coming to the surface - is that storing up problems for the future or would that just need to be treated before application? I'm sort of curious Disguay, you've got me thinking.
Also - I just posted a thread tonight on creating photoshopped images of x types after searching the internet for just such images and not finding any except one from Exepat - not realising there was one right close to home here in this thread. If you have any more, please post one to the photoshopping thread!

It's definitely a tuffy to think about repainting your car and getting it to look as good as factory paint. Considering the the way car makers, esp hi end companies like Jag, Cadillac, Merc, do paint. They treat the bare metal, then use controlled ovens and auto paint sprayer systems, and then gloss coat, and more computer controlled ovens to bake that on. In the end, you may end up at Earl Sheib's. If so, spring for all the extras.
haha well I have decided against the blue for right now, but I am still going to try matte white. If I don't like it, no big deal, I just rip it off and lose a couple hundred dollars. If it works, then I have an awesome looking car for a fraction of the price for a real paint job.
