2003 Jaguar X-Type 2.5 V6 - PATS/Immobilizer Programming Fails After Security Access

I’m looking for help diagnosing a PATS/immobilizer issue on a 2003 Jaguar X-Type (X400).

Symptoms:
  • Car will not start due to immobilizer/PATS issue.
  • Original cluster had the problem.
  • Installed a replacement cluster that was fully cloned (EEPROM/PATS/VIN/mileage transferred from original cluster).
  • Tried 3 different transponder rings.
  • Tried original key plus newly programmed transponder keys.
  • Battery voltage is 12.9V.
  • Wipers, lights, interior functions, etc. all work normally.
Using Jaguar SDD (v167) with JLR VCI/VXDiag.

What happens:
  1. SDD identifies vehicle correctly.
  2. SDD communicates with Instrument Pack (IP).
  3. Immobilization Setup starts normally.
  4. Security access countdown completes successfully.
  5. Existing keys are erased successfully.
  6. During key programming, immediately after the countdown and write attempt, SDD loses communication.
  7. Error displayed:
“Failed to re-establish communications - returning to main menu”
    Testman error: 12 57 20465
After failure, IP stores:
  • B1213 - Anti-theft number of programmed keys below minimum
  • B1601 - Passive anti-theft system received incorrect key code from ignition key transponder
Additional observations:
  • The instrument cluster appears to click/reset at the exact moment the programming write occurs.
  • SDD occasionally shows GEM/FETM/PAM not responding.
  • Sometimes SDD asks for vehicle specification/configuration information.
  • Immobilizer setup never completes and never reaches successful enrollment of the keys.
Question:

Has anyone seen SDD gain security access, erase keys successfully, then lose communication exactly when the key data is written? Would you suspect corrupted PATS/EEPROM data, cluster/IP failure, network/GEM issue, or SDD/J2534 communication failure?

Any known fixes or common causes on the X400 platform would be appreciated.

Your problem may originate in your version of SDD. There have been online reports that the newer versions can have problems with older cars. I know Google AI is not the most dependable source, but try Googleing :

Will SDD v167 suit my MY 2003 X type Jaguar

and it may introduce you to some new ideas to pursue.

Some locksmiths do. In fact, I personally have a Topdon TNinja pro that would work. I have a VM of the SDD that works for my X-Tyoe but I will have to post the download link later as I am not at my PC.

When you are trying to reprogram, how many keys are you trying to program. Do you have any linked already when you try to add more keys?

Default That would be great

I have two new keys and one original the orginal one worked for at least 10 years and it seemed to be fine. I had let the car sit for a bit and I guess the battery died cause after I charged the battery this whole mess started
