We would be glad to help but first we need a little more information. I guess that the Gearbox Fault Message is appearing on the dashboard. The 3000rpm limit is "Limp Mode" to prevent damage.
You need to have the OBD codes read and then post the numbers. Repairing a Jaguar by replacing parts is a very expensive way of trouble shooting. The codes will gives us better idea of whats wrong.

Alex, you can ignore the P1582 code. That is simply telling you that the flight recorder (yes, this vehicle has one) has sensed that your car has gone into "Limp Home" mode and it has recorded all the engine parameters at the time of the fault(s) to aide in troubleshooting things. You will need a special computer (one with jaguar SSD installed) to pull up this data, but if you can pull it up, you can see exactly what was in error with the car.
As for the P1251 error code, that is saying that throttle motor relay is not going off when commanded. This relay would be relay R11 in the engine bay fuse box. What I want you to try is swapping relays R11 and R3 in the engine bay fuse box. When you install the relay removed from R11 and put it in the R3 position, does the horn sound? If so, then you have a bad relay and that is the source of your problems. If the horns do not sound, then try removing the negative battery cable for say 30 seconds and then reconnect it (this clears all the codes in the ECU). take the car out for a run and see if the codes return. If they do, then the problem is not the relay (most likely faulted item).
If this does not fix your problem, let me know. The next steps will require some use of a multimeter. How are you with using one of those pieces of test equipment? If you have not a clue what I am talking about, do not worry, I just need to know what your level of experience with it is and I can explain things to a level that you can accomplish what needs to be done.

Alex, I would say to get your hands on a copy of the Jaguar Work Shop manual for your car (should be available for download under the sticky at the top of the main page under X-Type). If you go to section 303-14A, there is a troubleshooting section under there. Go to "Pinpoint Test T" (page 1306 of 2810). This will give you a step by step of what you need to do to isolate it down to a specific problem.
Before you go too far into this, did you try the relay swap like I mentioned? that may be a quick fix for you.

As a side note when I bought my second X-Type it had the same problems. I had a 500-mile drive home. I pressed the sport button by the shifter and it allowed me to drive home normally. Worth a try if you must drive it.
I need to now replace the knock sensor.
