Poor handling on wet roads
I have a 2003 x-type 2.5. I was driving in the rain yesterday, and any time I hit even the smallest amount of standing water, I had a very hard time controlling the car. It swerved all over the road. I had to do about 40mph the rest of the way home just to keep it in my lane. This is something new, so obviously something broke. Any ideas?

Hmm, not sure what to say, I'm new to my X-Type.
However we had high winds and there was a lot of rain down on the roads this morning.
Plenty of large puddles, and I made a point of hitting them, as well as lots of rain in the tire ruts on the road.
No problems that warranted me driving slower.

I get tons of rain here in Central Florida ( I mean TONS) and have had not one issue with the car as far as driving in the rain. Have you checked your tires? They might be worn or have other issues. Don't know if the DSC would come into play just by hitting puddles, but you might want to check if it's on. (Dynamic Stability Control) Actually it would automatically come back on after every restart of the car if it was accidentally turned off. So that's probably not it...

1stj, what type of tire are you running? Are you running a summer tire, all weather, snow, etc. This will have a large effect on how the car will handle in the rain. Secondly, how much tread do you have left? If you are down near the wear bars, almost any tire is going to perform poorly in the rain. Add in the effect of running a summer tire and yes, I can see where you might be in the situation you are. As long as you are running an all season tire, you should be good.
I know with my truck and mud tires, I don't even start to stress unless the water is over a foot deep at 40 mph. Even then I just keep the wheel straight. With the X, it isn't quite that good but running all weather tires, you should be able to run through 2 or so inches of water no problem.

Thanks for all the replies.
I will definately have the tires checked.
I am not sure that it is the tires because just one month ago I drove it from Illinois to NY, it poured both days of the trip and no problems, it handled beautifully.
This problem seems sudden and dramatic. That is why I thought something may have broken to cause this.

When I had my 3.0 Sport I looked forward to the rain and water on roads....very sure footed.Infact no car I have owned in 23 years of driving has had better grip and surefootedness than my old X Type and Ive owned quite a few including a Sierra XR4x4.
There must be something wrong with yours and there are quite a few components on the suspension to keep the handling and geometries in spec.
Have you hit something like a pothole or any other noises or symptoms?
