bharvey, first off, welcome to the forums. I think you will find a lot of very useful information here and lots of people willing to help. But, we are a quirky bunch and we do ask 1 thing of you. Please stop by the New Member section and introduce yourself. We like to get to know one another and become friends. We strive to be a bit different than your standard car club. This will also give you a chance to get to know who the movers and shakers are around the site. May even see a nice surprise here and there.

As for your problem, the code is telling me that you have a problem with the CAN bus (ie, the system that transmits the information between the computers of the car). Have you had any dash work done to the car recently. I would start in that area first as that is the most likely place to have an issue. After that, it is going to take a lot of hand over handing of the wiring to see where a wire bundle got pinched between a sharp edge and the body of the car. After that, one of your computer modules failed and now you are going to need to figure out which one is the offending one. If you just start guessing, this can become an expensive repair as the computers are not cheap.

Thanks I really appreciate the help.. Although I must add that the abs light stays on all the time. The car sounds as if it needs a wheel bearing or CV axle.. Could an issue like that cause the check engine light to pop up? If the abs system is not communicating correctly?

Before doing anything else, though, get the battery checked at somewhere like Autozone.
The commonest cause of this error seems to be a tired battery.
If it tests OK then DSC FAULT could be a wheel speed sensor for the ABS - plenty of threads on checking and cleaning them but that doesn't explain the CAN bus fault.
Take Chris's advice but also track down the wheel noise.

bharvey, if you are getting a DSC fault and also a wheel bearing noise, then odds are, you have a failed wheel speed sensor that is causing the DSC fault. Get a new wheel bearing for that corner of the car, check to make sure that the speed sensor is still good (look at the end of the sensor that is pointing at the bearing and if you see scuff marks in the end of the sensor, then get a new sensor, otherwise the sensor should be good). Then lets see what you have at that point. It is possible that if you have really trashed the one sensor, that it is grounding out and creating issues with the ABS module which would then affect the CAN bus. But that is a lot of things lining up for that to happen.

That's what I was thinking too, Chris.

So I replaced the driver side rear hub and the noise is gone and the car sounds quite like a jag.. The wheel sensor looked fine. Tonight I will check the rest of the sensors. Is there a way to scan and find the faulty sensor other than the dealer?

I fear not apart from trial and error. The sensors are easy to clean and visually check connectors and harness.
