Red face possible electrical failure or short?

Hi all...wondering if one of you veterans could point me in the right direction. Here are some of the things my 2005 X-type has done within the past 30 days

1. Radio rebooted while driving and it seemed that everything electrical went it... it all came back within a second

2. While making a right i signaled. The second i did that it seemed my electrical system wanted to cut off... kicked back in after a couple of seconds

3. After parking my car i noticed that my high beams were on. It was daytime and i hadn't switched them on. i had to restart my car to turn them off.

4. This morning after i took the key out car made funny noise. I turned it back on and it appeared that all my radio settings had reset to factory default (this normally happens when i disconnect the battery)

Any help would be much appreciated

tailsock, just to ask a silly question, but do you raise and lower your steering column a lot? For example, when you go to get out of the car, you raise the steering column up and when you sit down in the seat, you lower the seat down to put the steering wheel where you want it? That or you and your wife share the car and have completely different setups in the car.

From what you are describing, it is sounding like the wiring inside the steering column has become chaffed and is causing your random problems. If it isn't that, then I would be looking at the GEM module.

i don't mess with the steering wheel at all (it's just me that uses the car) I did, however, recently replace my coolant reservoir but i think some of those symptoms happened beforehand.

tailsock, if you look just in front of the reservoir tank, there are a few wire bundles that run right there. It may be possible that when you messed with the tank, you moved the cables some and this is now put them in harms way. may want to give the cables in that area a good look over.
