Default Puddle Lights

Stupid question but don't have access to the car right now. Does the X-Type wagon have under-door "puddle" lights under all 4 doors or just under the front doors?

Actually, it has no puddle lights; the red lenses on the front door casings are just that, red lenses. There are no puddle lights on the rear doors of the X-Type. The early cars (c.2002) did have puddle lights on the front doors only.

Thanks for the reply. I need to get back to the car and crawl under the front doors.

My 2006 had reflective lenses only. I added Jaguar Logo puddle lights.

Okay, now I'm curious. If you just had reflective lenses, where did you get power to run the logo puddle lights?

You can tap into power under your dash (i.e. footwell lights) and run into the door. I elected to use battery powered ones that are magnetically actuated (off on close, on when open).

conbobway, do some looking inside your door panels. You don't state the year that your car is. In short, the earlier cars pretty much came standard with the lights in the doors. The later ones did not. But, in a lot of cases, the wiring may be in the door already. So, you would need to see if you have a plug going to the door panel. If you do, then all you would need is a fuse and relay to power up the lights. Otherwise, you are going to need to create your own wiring harness to run to each door and tap the power off of say an interior light that comes on when the doors open. Make sure to power this via a relay to ensure you don't overload the light circuit.

Thermo:

Conbobway's car is a wagon and these were marketed in the US beginning in 2005 (and in Canada beginning in 2004) - therefore as I stated in #2 above his car has no lights in the doors. It would indeed be interesting to find out if the wiring harness is in place already, but I suspect that it is not, given the electrical revision of the X-Types done in 2004.

SOV211, looking at the diagrams, I do not see any wiring for the doors listed. Granted, I still seem to think that there were the newer cars that has lights in the doors as I seem to remember a few conversations about them and how in the 2005 range that it was hit and miss as to whether you had them or not. But, maybe my memory is starting to go.

Your memory is quite amazing, Thermo...but I have never seen the lights on any 2005-onward car - in fact not beyond the 2003 model year, and that is too bad because the lights are useful and they look good. Jaguar has a long history (decades) of deleting minor items during the production period - items which they deem to be not very important - that is, that the owner would not miss -I am not sure, however, how these lights would fit into that category. It is true that the wiring harnesses in Jags tend to be prepared for all options (an example of that on the X-Type is the fibre-optic cables for the CD changer; on other models, the wiring for the illuminated tread plates...); it is simply cheaper and less complicated that way. But given that the electrics went through a revision around 2004 MY, it is entirely likely that the wiring for these lights was deleted.

Yeah, my 2006 didn't have them. I looked hopefully for them but no dice.

Puddle lights..
Hi
I'm really keen on installing those puddle lights on to my xtype 2006 3.0 .The battery option appeals to me the most as less fiddling is required!!
Is it at all possible to let me know when you can get them from ?

Kind regards Teddy

You can find them by searching EBay, I found some that were a translucent brown casing that was a bit better for my interior (from black). An example =

After all this time, Dell, could you please provide an indication of battery life for these units. One thing I dislike is having to regularly change batteries, as I probably will use the lights until the battery expires and then neglect to put new ones in until quite some time later.

~4 - 6 months, I keep extra batteries in my center console because you don't notice they are out unless you open your door @ night. If you know you are going to be leaving your door open, like working on the car, there is a "toggle" off switch (resets when you close the door).

Placing the metal disk that activates the light on door sill (magnetic in light assembly) is touchy only in trying to get it positioned such that you don't inadvertently kick it getting in and out and perhaps not seeing it come loose and losing it.
