i have never done that (and hope the car never needs it but at nearly 270000km it may only be a matter of time.....) - be interested to see/hear how you go. there are a few threads here over the years on the topic as you have probably found.

Good luck!

Got the entire trans and transfer case out in about 6 hours. Job was pretty straightforward. Followed most of the steps in the trans replacement technical bulletin XT307-S941 and didn't have any surprises.

Getting at the top left bolt on the catalytic converter mounting bracket wasn't that difficult with my flex head ratchet wrench but it was tough getting the mounting bracket off and wound up taking it off at the same time I dropped the transfer case.

Made my own holder for the link shaft from an old spark plug loom and hose clamp and it worked great.

Removed the rear part of the transfer case before I took the subframe out to save having to remove the power steering heat shield. Didn't use an engine lift, just used my floor jack under the oil pan and once it was all out I put a wratchet strap on to hold the engine in place. The oil pan gasket is leaking pretty bad so that will be swapped also.

Should have the new trans in a few days and in the meantime I'll swap out the bearings in the rear of the transfer case and clean it all up.

The job wasn't all that bad and way easier than I dreaded it would be so hopefully going back in will be just as straightforward.

Went ahead and bought a new rear catalytic converter for $100 on e-bay as well since it's such a bear to get to and while the transfer case is out it's only another 10 minutes to change. Cheap insurance especially since it was already triggering cat low efficiency codes.

New used transmission and all the parts showed up yesterday.

Spent last night pulling the side cover and valve body of the trans, installing a new reverse/high piston assembly, new seals and o-rings, and cleaning out all the crud inside from sitting in the junkyard for a long time. Glad I took it apart as it had some rust and dirt inside that could have ruined it if it wasn't cleaned out. Guess that's why it's always good to check out used parts before you just put them in. They're not always as good as advertised.

Plan to put it all back together today, install new rear cat, oil pan gasket, transmission and transfer case.

Wish me luck.

Got the new rear cat and oil pan gasket installed yesterday. There is soo much more room with the smaller aftermarket cat that I don't think I'll have the problems I had getting the transfer case bracket out around the big OEM cat and no heat shield is required so more room to access all the bolts and O2 sensors. The old cat was setting low efficiency codes and once it was out it was clear from the chunks that fell out of it that it needed to be changed.

The oil pan fell right off once the bolts were out with the trans out of the car. Couldn't believe just how dirty and nasty the pan was, lots of caked on sludge and deposits that needed to be cleaned off. The previous owners must have used cheap dino oil and ran long on the oil change intervals for that much stuff to be inside. It's funny because the heads and valve covers didn't have any crud at all. One more reason to run good synthetic oil and change it often.

The junkyard trans I bought had a crack in the case and started leaking fluid as soon as I started pouring it in, so I had to pull it back out and swap over the front case on my old one. It gave me a chance to see inside the front of the transmission (torque converter side), it was pretty clean but had some sludge that needed to be removed. The filter is right under the case and once you take the 20 or so case bolts out the cover lifts right off and the filter and gears are easy to get to, had I known that it was so easy to take it apart, I might have tried to fix my old transmission once it was out of the car.

I'll now need to get a few oil seals and o-rings to make sure it's not going to leak once it's back in so Looks like I'm stuck waiting till next weekend to put it in the car.

Got the entire transmission, transfer case, and sub-frame etc back in the car. What was advertised as "perfect working, road tested, guaranteed" salvage yard transmission that I bought doesn't work, turns out the trans is junk.

Complete waste of money, days of labor, and now it's back to square one.

Pulled the valve body off and found some more broken parts behind it, swapped them out and installed my old gear position switch and now have all forward gears 1-5 but no reverse.

I think the salvage yard crew unscrewed the reverse band bolt when they took it out of the donor car causing the no reverse problem, but trans may still be terminal.

Totally frustrated after 20+ hours messing with it, so I finally gave up and dropped it off at the transmission shop today to see if they can fix the reverse problem without having to remove the trans again.

Well after shelling out $1967 for a complete transmission rebuild my daughters little kitty is purrrriiinnnggg like a kitten now.

All fixed, and once I put a hundred or so miles on it just to make sure its perfect, I plan on presenting her the Keys to her dream car tomorrow.

Well done!

Too bad you had to go for a total rebuild. At least you and she should have peace of mind for a long time.

Holy wow, where did you have it done for $1967?? The lowest quote I've gotten to rebuild my transmission is $4500.

American Transmission in Jacksonville FL, these guys are amazing and are one of the largest independent transmission companies in the US. They originally quoted me $2400 but gave me a break as I've used them a bunch in the past.

Okay everyone,
I'm making a video series on how to rebuild the Jaguar X type JF506E Transmission and transfer case, along with the valve body!!! Hopefully everyone will subscribe to my youtube channel, or I might sell it for like $5 or something, but it's looking like it's going to be a youtube thing right now. Hopefully everyone will enjoy!

I began reading this not knowing who the author of this thread was and then the story began to sound familiar and that's when I saw your screen name and figured out I read some of your story on your Restoration thread.

What a bummer to have spent all this time working on your tranny only to discover it would be to no avail. I guess sometimes it's best to leave the large jobs to the professionals, however, I commend you for your efforts.

Did you contact the business that sent you the bad tranny? They should be responsible for sending you a cracked and non-working part!
