The company I bought the used trans from was very good about fully crediting back my money and I don't think they had any idea beforehand that it was such a piece of garbage. It was worth trying my luck with a used trans even though it didn't work out. It's funny, I've put in 5 junkyard transmissions over the years and 3 of them turned out to be time and money wasted. Each time that happened, I've sworn to never do that again..

When I finally decided to cut my losses and put a re-manufactured one in it, it worked out cheaper to pay my local trans shop to do the entire job than to pull it and install it myself.

On the plus side (if there is one) I did learn quite a bit about these transmissions in the process, and got to replace the leaking oil pan gasket and bad rear catalytic converter while the trans was out so it wasn't time entirely wasted and I discovered that most of the usual problems (cracked reverse/high piston and bad shift solenoids) can be fixed with the trans still in the car.

The thick oil you see is some of the gearbox oil that has made it's way past the pinion bearing seal in the rear of the transfer case. It's harmless but probably a good indicator that you need to take the back cover off the transfer case and re-seal the shaft.

Yeah I have to replace my transmission and would love to view any helpful information. I might pull the engine and tranny, or will drop it not sure yet.

Hopefully just comments from those in the know, and withhold the "well if it was me comments" for expediency, that would be cool.

Default Help!!!

Hey I recently just took my starter off and found out the teeth are broke on flexplate. When getting a quote they said it was going to be a $2400 job including the price of the flexplate with is $250 max. I am pretty familiar with working on cars. I was just wondering what I’m looking at if I decide to drop the tranny myself and replacing the flexplate. I may just replace the whole tranny. What are the steps for tranny removal?
